What did you use to transfer the image to SSD?

Paragon Migrate the Intel migrate??? Neither?

I used neither. I did a clean install in ahci mode. Don't worry too muck, the registry tweek is simple if you have to do it. But I think you need to change to ahci mode before you boot into the ssd.

Well you all may be right.

The only other way is to use the Intel migrate which will copy the entire HDD then I will have to delete XP on the SSD and remove the partition.

I just got everything set up on Win7 the way I wanted.

If yo need to enable ahci use this tutorial by BFK. It is simple and works perfect, takes 5 minutes. The ahci drivers have to be installed before 1st boot.

Okay.
Paragon Migrate only listed the C/Win7 or E/XP - no System Reserve.

Intel Migrate showed the entire HDD- C, D- reserve, E.

I have Macrium images of XP so I can re image it later on the HDD.
So I deleted XP in Disk Management on the HDD then expanded C to include E/XP.
Intel Migrate then transfered the entire HDD "C" and "D" partitions to the SSD.
Then I rebooted and it went straight to the SSD.
I wasn't 100% sure, it was slow on first boot after transfer which drive booted.

Went into Disk Management and new C is on the SSD and is only "Boot"
Win 7 on HDD is bootable but would have to be done thru bios now.

Did the BFK tutorial for AHCI.
ALL drivers then installed.
Reboot to Bios and set it to AHCI.
Reboot and here I am!

As you will see in Snip Reserve appears screwed up. Too small.
I don't know what happened at it shows empty.
Might be an Administrator thing to access files???

Anyway it works so I may do a wipe and clean install this weekend.
I mostly wanted to make surethe SSD worked today.

I am deeply appreciative for everyones assistance!

Hoppy, just guessing... The migration tool was migrating from a larger HD to a smaller HD. It only transfered the 'written to' part so that it could accomplish that. That is why system reserved is so small. It only transfered the boot files from the old HD. But, I think you will not be able to do a system image the way it is set up. If you re-install do a secure erase with the toolbox first.

Any issues with the migrated OS on the SSD?

If you are going to do a clean install, as essenbe mentioned, secure erase and then leave the SSD unformatted and just point the installer to the SSD.
All of the important SSD settings will be done by win7, then run the toolbox to check.
You will get the 100MB boot partition, correct alignment, defrag will be off, etc.
Be sure that AHCI is set in BIOS before you do the clean install.

You can get all of your previous settings by using easy transfer.

Windows Easy Transfer - Transfer To & From Computers - This tutorial will show you how to transfer your user files and settings from one computer to another using the Windows Easy Transfer tool.

I've used this several times, your new clean install will look and have all the settings of your old personalized install.

You'll have to install all (most) your programs before running the easy transfer to the new SSD, good opportunity to make sure you have the latest versions, it will put your settings on programs also.

I keep the old install on the HDD for a while, in case you need to check settings or anything else.

Ive always said (as well as many others) that a SSD is the 1 single upgrade you can do where the results are immediatly apparent.


My guess is you noticed the difference pretty much at boot

First boot I wasn't sure which drive was booting after Migrate. It was about normal for the HDD but I didn't time it.
I think Migration software was finishing on first boot. The Intel Migration window popped up for a couple of seconds.

Turned on AHCI and rebooted turned it on in Bios and second time was noticeably faster. Not down to 20 seconds or anything near that.
Web page load and refresh are much faster.
Especially refresh. Click, 1, done. No 2,3,4 done.

I'm glad I didn't go for more speed like the OCZ Vertex3.
It would have been a waste of money.

I have a friend who comes to me when she needs computer work done. I've often upgraded stuff for her, then had to explain to her why the new hardware was better, since she really didn't notice it. I dropped an SSD in her rig last fall and for the first time ever she was going "wow" right off the bat.
