Congrats Mike, glad you got it sorted.

Any bump in benchmarks is a good bump

This was bugging me, it might have been something with the Macrovision installer, I've never used it or read anything about it, a quick google yielded little info.

Option for next time, there's always an option, try disabling marcovision in msconfig startup tab.

Still wondering how the Series 5 driver was Intel and the AS SSD said the driver was msachi?
It is a good thing as the old Intel driver can not pass the Trim command, but still !?!

Thanks for this discussion. I had installed the IRST and found no increase in performance, and a slight decrease, so I went back to the msahci image.


The scores are all about the same, so I'll stick with it.

Mike was having trouble with secure erase, thought the driver might be the problem.

If you get a chance try the ToolBox, check everything except the secure erase

The old driver when I clicked properties then Driver "Details" as in below Snip.
There were 3 Intel drivers listed but none iastor and one MS Msahci driver.
So it was using a MS AHCI driver in the Intel package.

All four had certificates.

The original ASUS/Intel driver had no AHCI mode. You had to download and use Intel Matrix for Raid which gave you AHCI.
It was strictly Raid no option for a single hard drive with AHCI mode.
You had to select at least two hard drives to activate and install it from floppy or USB, etc.

So MS added the Mshaci when it installed the other Msahci for functionality.

The msahci driver does work with the toolbox. The only problem is secure erase but I can get it to work with the x25-M which I have. I think the problem was Hoppy's 320 with incription. Just a guess. But the toolbox will work for me with msahci. I'm trying iastor now just to see if there is a difference.

Ive had no issues with the Ms AHCI driver either.

However, as I mentioned previously, I did have issues trying to Secure Erase my Intel SSD.
After deleting the partitions, and cycling the power, it would just keep refreshing. It would not actually initiate the SE.

For me, the fix was indeed using the Intel AHCI drive, iastore.
Im using the 02HD FW on my X-25V if that makes a difference.

Haven't used the msachi driver so was curious.
Will be nice to see if that is what is causing issues with secure erase.

Forgive me for what may seem a stupid question long after the fact, but what is the big need for Secure Erase to begin with?

My understanding is that SSDs pose an inherent security risk in that they are quite easy to "unformat", meaning that you'd want a sure 'nuff deletion of all your data before you sold one, but for a standard wipe-and-reload, what's the need? Is it performance related?

Yes, performance related usaually. Secure erase is supposed to return the drive back to factory condition. I have done several and yes it helps performance. But performance is usually pretty good without secure erase. I just usually do it when I reinstall windows. With me messing with the computer that is quite often. I told my sister the other night that the only thing I am really good at is installing windows. That's because I have a lot of experience.

Those links are to Parted Magic which we tried on Hoppys drive without success. I use Parted Magic because it is usually easier than the toolbox.

BTW: that is an excellent program to have in your toolbox. It is a linux based program with about 10-12 different programs on it, like gparted, clonzilla, hd erase (for SE) and several others. I have used it often.

A Guy, how much do you know about 'over provisioning'? I read on Intels forum that you can get better performance by doing that. Just wonder what you know. I have never tried it.
