hadn't thought about that. hmmm... no need in wasting money i guess

It is a nice academic exercises to Raid SSDs and be able to look at data transfer rates of 400 MBytes/sec+. But since SSDs are typically used for the OS where the files are small, it does not buy you anything in real life.
That will be different once we get 500GB SSDs for an affordable price that we can use to store large data files. But that is not for tomorrow.

Hello Good People:

I am getting ready to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7 64 bit operating system to my INTEL SSDSA2MH080G1GC SSD Hard drive on an ASUS P5B premium series motherboard. Since it is a first generation SSD hard drive it does not support the TRIM function. I have read in this forum that I should change to AHCI in the bios before the reinstall to get the most out of my SSD. After I change to AHCI in the bios is there anything else that I should know and do before this clean reinstall?

Damn I can't believe this guys. My drive has died after two freakin days!! Right when I was done installing everything (about 20gb worth) the thing totally dies. Bios no longer picks it up or anything:( I was downloading ME2 -to another drive no less- when I walked away for a sec and heard the pc restarting. That was all she wrote. Tbh I should not have kept it when I found out it was using a jmicron controller so I deserve it.
I'm actually not going to go through this again so I'm going to exchange it for an Intel ssd. I will have to sleep on whether I should just grab the 80gig or fill in for the 160. This sucks big time either way..

That's too bad....you might be happier when you exchange it. Intel will be a big step up from the one you had. Good luck with the next one.

I run this system off an Intel 80GB and that is perfect. I have divided it into 2x40GB partitions - one for the system (which hovers around 15GBs) and the other one for high usage data (the rest is on the HDDs). I am so pleased with that disk that I bought another one last week for one of my HP laptops that runs a little hot - I hope to lower the temp with it.

What a bummer, after the help I received here I decided to finally order an SSD, I went for the 160GB Intel G2R5 myself, hope to have it next week. Based on the reading I did I felt that it was the right choice for me. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thanks guys. I decided to go with the 80gb and a shiny titanium pro sound card to replace my on-board audio. They wanted $475 for the 160 which was out of my league for now, especially when the 80gb+x-fi was over $100 less.
But you guys were right; this is what ssd's should be like...screaming! My wei disk score went from 6.9 to 7.8! I'll run a bench or two on it once I finish installing everything but so far I can tell its quite a bit faster just by doing every day tasks.
Thanks again

Edit- Forgot to ask one thing. is it still useful to run the intel optimizer even if TRIM is working?
thanks

The Intel optimizer doesn't offer any benefit if TRIM is working. That's really for those who don't have TRIM support.

For those who wonder why I am conservative when it comes to firmware upgrades and stick to a "if it's not broke, don't break it" mentality....it's stuff just like this.

seems i may have spoken too soon. i thought i bricked it initially because i got several error messages on several different attempts to update the f/w. the last time was a success though! Yay!:D (thank goodness! as i was going to buy a replacement tomorrow with money i don't have)

man, oh man. i think i skipped my 43rd and 44th birthdays and aged myself right into 45! i surely thought i bricked this ssd. error messages on a f/w update is never good thing. but i guess persistence pays off sometimes (?) LOL! got it working. benches are are only a hair above what the were before the f/w update--although the atto bench does show that the read times have improved.

prior to the update, my system felt as it did before my hdd upgrade. my previous system disk was a 1tb wd caviar black. honestly, the ssd didn't have that "snappiness" to it as others say that their systems possess. well, after this f/w update (and i suppose my last on this drive :)), my system does seem to have some snappiness to it. that's good.

if i still drank, i'd be heading to the store to get me something right now! this was an ordeal that thankfully ended right.

The transfer times are within the norm. But the access time is unusually high - usually it is 0.1ms. What kind of a SSD is that?

oh, and before the f/w upgrade, access time was at .9:p

You'll have to let us know how the new F/W performs for the PS-100. I would be interested to know after a month or two. Thanks for posting and good luck with the new SSD!
