Shutdown.exe does not afford a method to abort execution without a secondary /a shortcut. Is there a way to access Win7's normal shutdown procedure? The reason being is that it is possible that some work may not be saved and shutdown.exe doesn't care if the timer runs out, events are going to happen. thanks...

Hello rdwray,

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to create an "Abort" shortcut that you can pin or use where you like for easy usage.
Of course, it will only work if shut down was used with a timer like the one below to be able to have enough time to click on the Abort shortcut. The default shut down in the Start Menu does not have a timer and is an instant shut down.
Hope this helps, :)

Brink, thanks for getting back. I did take a look at your tutorial, but it comes up short in that, as you say, things have to happen before the timer runs out or it has to be set for a longer period. I was hoping there was a way to access the Win7 shutdown, but I didn't really think so.

Well, you could also not shut down until you are ready to.

Did you have some sort of scheduled shut down set?

I have 2 power monitors (one .exe and a gadget) that I can put on my desktop that have buttons for functions like shutdown and restart, etc. The .exe I wrote and works well because I use dialogs that the user has to respond to; the problem is that unless it has the focus, the buttons to not work on first try. The gadget is the problem because it has to use batch files and this is where I need the modification for shutdown.exe.
