Hey, I had the same problem after going from Vista to Seven. I figured out that my computer's hardware did not support S1? and S2? sleep. To use sleep I had to go to the power settings and within the plans enable 'Hybrid Sleep', after this it sleeps perfectly. Your problem sounded exactly the same as mine, so hopefully this works for you to.

Capt.Jack Sparrow:
i tried all those steps but didn't do anything...i went to hp chat support and the person told me to change some settings in the advanced power options. he told me to change under "power buttons and lid" to "do nothing" and "hard disk" to "never" and that didn't work either!! and this morning windows action center told me to download some chipset and media driver so i did those...still nothing...!!! this is really stressing me out :(

205tim:
thanks for your reply i will def try that tonight. because i noticed only after the lid is closed for a long time, the computer shuts down by itself so i will try that when i sleep and hopefully in the morning i will wake up to a a working computer.. fingers crossed!

ahh unfortunately "hybrid" didn't work for me...
and johnathan:
this is what i got, standby <S1> the system firmware does not support this standby state
standby <S2> the system firmware does not support this standby state

so i'm guessing that's why the computer keeps turning off bcause it doesn't have sleep mode...?? then why does the computer have options to go into sleep mode?!
and in that case what should i do? i tried hybrid that didn't work either....i just want the computer to "sleep" without shutting it off...how can i do that now?

I suggest a BIOS update. You may also check in the BIOS, to make sure S3 sleep is enabled, or any "Suspend to RAM" settings.

theog: i read that but i couldn't find the hotfix request page, everytime i went on that page it said it had been modified...

and tim: could you tell me which options you have selected for under "edit plan settings" and "change advanced power settings"?? thanks!!

Here is a screen shot of how to turn hybrid sleep on once you are in the 'advanced power settings'. Make sure that you edit all the power plans that you use, or it will work sometimes but not others.

EDIT: Also, as J. King said make sure that S3 sleep is enabled in the BIOS, or this won't work.

thanks tim, but i'm not sure how to enable S3 in BIOS...how do i get into BIOS??

Normally when you turn the computer ON during boot-up you can usually tap the DEL key several times & it will take you to the bios setup. Look through the several menu screens for enabling the S3 sleep mode. Save & Exit & re-Boot computer.
