By no problems, do you mean that the safemode boots produced a reasonable bootup and shutdown times?

Of your remaining installed programs, I see nothing which should be giving you long bootup or shutdown times.

yes. boot and shut down immediately. however, this has always been the case when shutdown and boot just after. it is only after the pc has been off for an extended period, say overnight etc, that it takes a long time. so we will have to wait until tomorrow...

Download, install Autoruns: Autoruns for Windows

Run as administrator | from the top menu bar | File | Save | SAVE button

Zip up the resulting autoruns.arn and attach to your next post.

hi karl, here is the zip file.

the reason i did the clean reinstall a month or so ago was to solve this boot issue and the inability to read usb flash sticks that comes with the boot issue. i can only assume it is a mechanical issue...

run autoruns again.

This time, any of the entries where is says "file not found" (they are probably marked in yellow), then delete them.

Reboot your computer.
Run autoruns again. Send a fresh autoruns.arn file. thanks, karl

done. i wonder why there are so many windows 32 system files as this is a 64? is this an issue? also, i rebooted with a usb stick in that wasn't being read and when reboot it flashed up but dropped out again. endless usb issue... i'm off to work. maybe i have to get more shifts so i can buy a new pc!

If you are still having problems, then final last-gasp attempt:
Uninstall LogMeIn and Teracopy, both of which have been known to cause problems, although not on all systems.

i pressed power on at 8am this morning. it is now 7:30pm and it is still not on!

when it turns on i will clean reinstall and not worry about reimaging the disk. maybe that is the issue... I reimaged with image taken when problems were happening. WHO KNOWS?! it is rubbish... if it behaves like this after reinstall I guess it is rubbish. If not, we'll know it was my reimaging.
