You must use your own. If nothing else there would be problems with the key.

I really do appreciate all your help. Thank you so much. I am still having this problem- Slow boot up follow by "windows failed to connect to a service."

When I get the notification, I can still access the internet and go on websites. I think this notification slows down my computer.

You need to do a Repair Install as Rich suggested. This is not the same as Startup Repair. A Repair Install is run from the Win7 installer from the desktop, an Upgrade over itself. It keeps all files, settings and programs in place while reinstalling the OS. It should solve your problems.

Read about it here: Repair Install

Do you have a Win7 install DVD? You will need it for the repair. If you don't have one, then you can borrow one and unlock all versions if necessary to use your licensed version.

I suggest before doing this you replace Norton with free MS Security Essentials, and run the Malwarebytes scan Rich also suggested.

Also look in the Task manager at running processes, click on the CPU category heading to see which process is running up your CPU to 100%.

A repair install? I am kind of scared though. I upgraded to my vista laptop to windows 7. Months after that, I tried installing it on my friend's computer. It went horribly wrong. The laptop went into an endless reboot. So that's why I am scared.

I have no reason to stop using norton internet security 2010. It was fine before. It was only when I did a system repair thats where things start to get all funny. Anyway, is there else worth doing before I might consider a repair stall?
thanks for the tip :)

Back up a Win7 System Image externally so you can start over at any time: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html

Now that you say you did an in-place Upgrade of Vista to Win7, this is becoming more clearly the result of corruption which often occurs in an upgrade install.

Your very best course now is to clean reinstall. Just because you had problems on a friend's computer doesn't mean that these will occur on this machine. And the results will be a much cleaner lighter install without the corruption which is bogging it down.

If anything goes wrong, you'll have the image to fall back on. In fact, make another one with free Macrium Reflect and it will be failsafe.

this makes alot of sense. I just don't understand how a system repair would create more problems for me.Everything was lightning fast before all this happened. This is my attempt to fix my laptop:

1. Scanned my computer using norton internet security 2010, malwarebytes and superantispyware free edition

2. Uninstalled norton
3. Clean reboot
4. reset winsock in command prompt
5. ran a bunch of utilities

After all these attempts my laptop is still running and the notification still pops up ["Windows failed to connect to a service"

What :bunch of utilties" did you run? If these are tweaking utilities then you can make your system worse off, not better. Win7 requires no tweaking other than normal system settings. It will almost always come back to bite you.

Try to System Restore back as far as you can since you don't have a System Image to take you back to the start.

Google repeat errors in Event Viewer>Admin View to see if you can resolve them. At Computer>Properties page click through the WEI score link to access Advanced Tools to see if any issues are cued at top of page, study the Performance log and Generate a System Health Report. Make sure all of your drivers are up to date in Device Manager.

Run sfc /scannow as Admin to see if System Files are corrupted beyond repair.

Run the Repair Install as a last resort before clean reinstall.

In my opinion, the installation has been corrupted since the upgrade install over Vista, and it would be much easier to simply wipe and reinstall...
