So I bought Mass Effect 2...

Mass Effect 2 is fantastic. I finished Mass Effect 1 a while back and grabbed Mass Effect 2 as soon as I could. Running it on 1920x1080 with all the settings maxed out is great. I also found a tutorial for getting AA working with nVidia cards so I'll be trying that out in the near future.

I hate the new ammo system, but a quick modification to Coalesced.ini takes care of that annoyance.

Also, has anyone else that's playing (played) Mass Effect 2 noticed that the Renegade choices in this game seem less "cold/pragmatic" and more "jerk-like?" I really liked the Renegade path in Mass Effect 1 because you could be ruthless in completing objectives without being a jerk to everyone. Seems like it's a bit different in Mass Effect 2 as I find myself picking more and more Paragon choices.

Completey agree. I also noticed I didn't get any renegade choices in dialogue box, blue for Paragon, Red for Renegade. My character tended to be the saintly type, with a hint of devil. My second play thru may be ruthless though :D

Great game, just finished it last night. I'll post my final thoughts later.

Peace.

too short as in main story line, as in the missions not the assignments (so i got everyone to loyal).

true, i could explore every world to hopefully find some random gang base, and that is a great part of the game. but IMO the main story line is too short for an rpg. i don't want to accidentally type a spoiler so i'll just stop there.

AND the lack of items give the sidequests a kind of a no point feel. for instance in baldur's gate there are several sidequests to an amazing piece of armor or an uber weapon... and it makes you feel like the sidequest is worthwhile. while in ME2 most of the time you just get credits or some resources... which leaves a meh feeling.

oh yah i have everything set to on except the filtering... i guess i forgot that setting and it would prob kill my vid card.

---------but on to another subj. who are your favorite characters and which character combos did you gravitate towards?

jack and samara for me-- two godly biotics... shockwave needs no line of sight and reave will pretty much damage anything. combine that with very low recharge time with subject zero and asari justicar maxed out... biotic babes of destruction.

So I finished Mass Effect 2 last night….

So now having completed both games I’ve become an instant fan.

Now, as mentioned earlier in this thread, ME2 sort of picks up where ME1 left off, and before starting the game, you will be asked about the choice you made in ME1 (only if you don't have a saved game from ME1). If you do have a saved game (if you played both choices you should have two) it/they can be imported into ME2 and your decision will be carried on from there.

Now the game basically starts out with a cut scene of your ship getting destroyed. Later you’re asked to recruit a new team for a tough suicide mission to eliminate an immediate threat to the galaxy. "nuff said.

The game can basically be broken down into 3 phases - team building, completing personal side missions with each team member, and the main mission. There’s plenty of action to go around and you won’t be disappointed.

And while there are some missions that require you to visit certain places, a premium is placed on exploring the universe as you’ll need to scout the systems and planets for minerals and items needed for upgrades to you, your ship, and teammates.

You’ll find minerals by doing planet scans, which can also reveal hidden missions. These missions can earn you and your squad bonus level up points. Whether you want to do all the exploring is up to you, but its part of the game experience and reading the history of some of the planets is fascinating and adds to the story.

I love the dialogue system here and there are plenty of opportunities to converse with your teammates as this gives you a better understanding of their character and makeup. Some of the conversations can be quite hilarious – I’ll give you this one… Mordin sings! Others have to do with courtship.

Replay-ability... as with most games with multiple choices in decisions, I think it's safe to say this has plenty of replay value.

Length of game – if you do all the missions, side missions, and some exploring, it’s safe to say you’ll get around 40 hours of gameplay; millage varies of course.

Graphics – Sorry but I can’t say they are "way" better than ME1, though they are quite good, especially in some of the buildings/structural details. I also found to the cut scenes to be movie like quality.

Sound quality – To me some of the best sounding games as far as gunplay are Far Cry (the first one), FEAR (the first one), and the Half-Life 2 series. Man the first time I got shot with the shotgun in Half-Life 2, I literally jumped.

I have an old Altec Lansing ACS641 powered speaker system that thumps and I have to say that the weapons fire in Mass Effect 2 is quite good, and loud. There have been a few instances where I had to turn the volume down, or use my headsets, to keep the wife… and neighbors happy. The ambient sounds aren’t bad as well – go to deck 3 and listen around the mess hall. Very nice.

Game environment was an improvement over ME1 as some of the environments there tended to be the same and got monotonous after awhile; here it’s not so bad. Thank You!

As for performance - I had absolutely no issues whatsoever. None. And I played like 3 hours straight at times. You can have a look at my system specs; also note that I have the game settings maxed using the latest video card drivers (Catalyst 10.1) for my ATI HD4890.

Game/issues - One issue I have with ME1, which could have been fixed for ME2, is the whole explore a planet with the Mako experience. I drove up straight 90 degree cliffs, plunged straight down off high mountain tops and paid no penalty. In short I found driving the Mako in ME1 extremely unrealistic. It would have been nice see this fixed and incorporated in ME2. Oh well.

And other than the annoying changes in ME2 as mentioned earlier in this thread (requirement to purchase fuel and/or probes, the new hacking system) I found the gameplay to be just as good, if not better, than ME1.

To me, the game, and story, was very well thought out. It lived up to everything I had hoped for and more. I found it to be a really solid game with a very good storyline. As I stated earlier, they’ve done a really good job of carrying the story over from ME1, even the seemingly insignificant characters and missions from ME1 have meaning here. This is the way a sequel should be made.

I’ve definitely been converted to fandom.

My two cents.

Next stop… Bioshock 2

Peace.

Same here - what AF level did you choose? As for the options, you can turn them "on" so to speak. I went for 2x AF. Any more and there was slight hitching. One crash. Played mostly for 5hrs at a time, with a few short breaks.

Believe it or not I had mine at 16. I posted the image earlier in this thread. I really enjoyed the game, in fact, i'm about to redo the last mission with different choices to see the outcome.

Great great game.

I just realized we have the same card. FYI, I've always leave my CCC setting at default and do all my setting in-game. Doing it this way has never given me game issues.

CCC settings pg1.JPG

Every now and then I might try to force AA through CCC, but for the most part I leave it alone.

Anyone find some of the secret missions (hidden planets)?

Supposedly at least 17 side missions hidden on other planets you must scan for.
Some planets/solar systems are locked until you do other things.

Overall I too really liked the game, but some things were disappointing IMO.

I/E, playing as a Paragon. Many of the choices just didn't seem to fit IMO. It worked out better in ME1 I think.
IMO, theres no way a Paragon would assist IM any way, shape, or form.Especially after all that happened in ME1. They would have sought help elsewhere

Renegade on the other other hand I can see sticking it out. And it all works for Renagade type.

I dunno, maybe my view of it is a bit diff.

I found quite a few, but then again, I pretty much explored the the entire galaxy. I wanted to make sure I had all the minerals I needed as some were hard to find. EZ

You did notice you had Renegade/Paragon choices through mouse clicks as well, right?

Anyway, the way they had the Paragon/Renegade system set and the choices given makes me think they wanted Shepard to be more of a diplomat. After all he was not only representing Humans, but all of the species. However, you do have a choice of which way your character will develop through the decisions you make, even though you say they make no sense, some of them will assist in opening up more renegade dialogue, same as it did for paragon.

I will say this, even though I have a low Renegade score in ME1, it did seem more balanced since I did get some renegade choices in the dialogue system. But then again, there were instances in the game where you "needed" to intimidate. Maybe the system was set up to allow a certain amount of renegade choices with a low score, where as in ME2, the bar is higher. Don’t know, but…

Here's my score from both games...

Bioshock 2 looks virtually the same as the first, so textures are a bit low resolution. Force Anisotropic Filtering to 4X in CCC and save the profile as Bioshock 2. Much better - I had to jack up the brightness a bit too. For me, AA isn't necessary. Even better, 3GB of RAM is recommended so its optimised for x64!

Are you serious? This is probably the least efficient method I can think of.

An hour and a half to two hours a week doing this keeps my system running just as fast as it was the day I installed windows 7. All my media and personal files are on a separate partition from the OS and programs, so I don't lose anything when I do it. Everything else I've tried results in an inevitable slow down. Maybe when I can afford a large SSD it won't be necessary any more, but I like being able to cold start my system in about 30 seconds.

Do a clean restore, install ME2, save the image. Problem solved.
