Hi folks,

I'm looking for a (free) software that can lock a drive/folder/s & other user cannot delete it ie folder until they provide the password or logged in as an admin.

Thank you!!! :geek:

You can find some freewares on the download sites but I haven't tried them. Don't know how effective they are. Another approach may be to see the tutorial for setting up the "real Administrator" account on Vista or W7 and create the folder in that account. Supposedly somebody with less privilege shouldn't be able to delete it. Use an encryption program to encrypt the folder contents.

If you want quick access use the fast user switching to log in as Administrator.

Also there was an 'su' program around that let you log in as admin similar to how it works in Linux su command. I don't know if it's updated for Vista/W7 though. I used it in NT Server 4.

Yeah i agree with you on that but i'm normally logged in as Admin & if my comp happens to be not locked & any of my friends happen to be there just checking his/her mail i don't want them to check my folders/a particular drive....i know that some folks might say that create another user & give your self some privleges & stay logged in but instead of being logged in as an Admin but again my folders & drive still will not be protected from others.....

Thats the reason why i want to lock them even when i'm logged in as Admin so i can lock it before giving my comp to some1 & still can have a piece of mind....

Yeah even i don't know if "su" command works on Win7 or not even i have used it on NT Server 4 along with Linux OS.

I've heard of Raid but have no experience with it. You may want to try the system builder guys. They tend to have a handle on the hardware stuff.

If you really leave the machine sitting in the real full blown Administrator's account then I don't know how you can keep other people from doing anything. Since they could probably just undo anything you did as there's no restrictions.

I don't think I'd rely on a password folder gadget. I'd go with encryption and logging into a restricted account. Any little freeware utility there's probably a forum for it and in 2 minutes of searching somebody can likely find how to bypass the password for an "emergency" or the software failed etc.. I just wouldn't rely on it.

I use the Secret Disk software to hide my important files and projects. It creates a virtual "X" drive, that is only viewed when the program is open, with a password.

Stupid question... what's wrong with bitlocker?

It's already built into Ultimate, and you can set it up so the drive unlocks with a password. Simples.

Why do you think its a Stupid Question??? BEcause you know the answer & some1 else don't??? I guess then upto 60% of questions on 7forum are Stupid questions according to your notion & with 3000+ post you might have answered all in the same way....Thank you buddy!!! But i guess no question is a Stupid question (according to Shawn our Admin & as well as sevenforums) I'm aware that BitLocker is an in-built feature with Ultimate,Enterprise edition (can't say about Home/Premium edition as never used it) but if 1 is logged in with the Admin account then the drive is unlocked by default if then some1 access your files, folders how to protect it, that what i wanted to know??? And others did helped me to get what i was looking for Simple!!!

I apologise :) I think you may have misunderstood me. I was not calling your question stupid. I meant that I was about to ask a stupid question. Obviously I knew that you didn't want Bitlocker for whatever reason, I was just curious as to why.

Sorry again for any misunderstanding.

Not an Issue Buddy...it was just..the way you said it, will make any1 feel offended even if that's not your intention...because an experience (3000+ post & 2 g8 batch) guy like you will never say anything as such & i know that...But no hard feeling :D & we are good.....;)we are Geeks we don't have time to fight so let the Politician do that for us let us make Win7 an g8 experience for our fellow mates...

Coming back to your question: Why not using BitLocker as i mentioned in the above posts that i hate creating mulitple user account as i'm a Tester by nature & keep trying out average 5-7 apps/prog in a week & can't keep switching b/w different accounts, so logged in the Admin account all the time. Now if my roommate happen to check his mail, that's when i'm vulnerable as No BitLocker will be in place though i use another app/prog like WinMend's Folder Hidden but that can only hide files & folder but not a complete disk drive, so i wanted to know if any program/s/w available that i can use to lock a complete partition drive.:geek:
