According to Sony, the following discs are compatible (for playback) with the DAV-DZ340K: CD-R/CD-RW and DVD-R/+R/+R DL/+RW/-RW/-RW. There's also a notation that "Some discs may not be played back." I'm guessing that even if a disc is listed, some manufacturing processes may not be compatible with the playback function in the DAV-DZ340K.

DAV-DZ340K : DVD Home Theatre System : Home Theatre System : Sony India

If you're using a remote to try to play the DVD, according to Sony, no remote codes are currently available online for the DAV-DZ340K. Remote codes are often listed in the product manual, so it is recommended you check there.
Note: If this remote came with another Sony product (e.g. TV, DVD, etc...), the remote codes may be listed in the manual for that product.

In doing some more research, I found out that every DVD has a 4 digit code at the beginning of the disc called a "book type". Many devices will use this code to determine how the disc should be treated. One common cause of compatibility problems is the failure of a device to recognize the book type of the disc.

And apparently this compatibility problem goes back several years. I found another forum thread from 2007 where some DVDs won't play in a Toshiba but will play in a Sony.
