Hi,
I'm a first time user and I'm not that much into computers. Noting that my computer is reaching its space capacity I decided to move my files to the external drive. Nothing much have changed so I used the space sniffer app to check what was taking the space. To my surprise I was just using 9.1 gb of space, the rest were computer files. An IT friend of mine deleted some things in order help with that, but not that much changed either with the exception that I wasn't able to see most of the icons on my desktop (IBM SPSS, Office, ADOBE, Skype, and Vsee, as far as I identified).

Giving it a week, an update downloaded and I was able to see some of the icons (Vsee, some of the adobe files, and some of the office files). Trying to identify which ones appear and which didn't, it appears that the Office ones that appear are the newer ones, not the past 2010 file versions, same happens with adobe. Checking a little bit more, I found out that some other icons don't appear, as you can see in the taskbar (like the intel wifi icon). I tried this tutorial of yours, as it was a recommendation, plus was the first one that appear in google and had good reviews. Nothing work. I even did the .reg one that you have (Default File Type Associations - Restore), and nothing happened either.

I work with a lot of documents, and it helped me a lot to see the small preview of the icon before when looking for the docs. Now it pisses me off not to being able. I'm attaching a screen shot so you can see whats going on.
(In the screenshot you will see that the adobe files in the desktop appear, but in the separate windows of the desktop, they don't). I really appreciate all of the help that you can give me.

Thanks.

I wonder why you are running out of space, especially if your own files are 9 GB. Can you post Disk Management screen? Also, check your programs from "programs and features" in control panel. Desktop icons are not very reliable in this respect.
The programs in the notification area (far right on taskbar) need not necessarily an icon on desktop, most are auto-started.

For preview see if it is enabled. Look at the explorer window in your screenshot. Upper right under "search desktop" check the right-most icon - enable preview pane.

I just checked and I'm not running out of space, meaning that with the things my friend deleted it helped. Though I don't have that much programs when I checked, I found the icon thing again in that window. I attached the a screenshot of the two things.

You are using 40GB total, and that seems normal.
Did you find preview pane? You didn't mention that.
Anything else troubling you?

What's the preview pane? What is troubling me is that some of the icons appear, and some not. As seen in the screenshot of the desktop.

To open preview pane: (then when you select a file, it will show a preview on the right side of explorer)
explorer preview pane.jpg

If you are asking about the icons in Start Menu - right above All Programs: they are only some recently opened programs and doesn't mean much, you can clean them (right click and "remove from list")and new ones will show in time.

If you wish to pin any of them to the upper part of Start Menu, simply right click on shortcut (either the temporary ones right above All Programs, or the ones inside All Programs) and select "Pin To Start Menu".

Did I get you right? Hope this helps.

Got it. I know about that. Just left those open over there so it was easier to show what I wanted. Look at the open window, the icons are not shown properly, and look at some of the desktop, even in the taskbar the skype doesnt appear as the skype icon.

The ones with white pages next to them like the ones below look like programs that have had their files and folders deleted. If you click on them in Add/Remove Programs it will probably give you a message along the lines of 'This program has already been removed, remove from list?'.

Give it a try and see what happens.

Boozad & mitchell: that's the tutorial that I tried before. Also, another one that you can find along the threads, but nothing happened. Boozad, I open all the icons and every one opens with their respective programs.

I never said anything about whether files open with their respective programs or not, I said click on one of the programs in Add/Remove Programs that has the white paper icon and see what message it gives you.

Mitchell I tried the option 1 in the tutorial, and from the thread I tried the Default File Type Associations - Restore, too.

Boozad this is the message:
