Hello to the Se7en Security Community, ...hope your virus paranoia level is low today with clouds from the west, tomorrow a chance of high paranoia as the mercury rises.

But Honestly, I'm posting to do a quick review of Kasperskys 2011 Internet Security Suite better known as KIS to its owners and insiders as well as a slight comparison to its newest product, Pure.

KIS 2011 is very similar to 2010 with the exception of a different layout in the General User Interface (GUI). Most all features found in 2010 is found in 2011 without any new features added. This might be due to the fact that Kaspersky has come out with a new Internet Suite called "Pure".

Pure has many new features along with all the features found in 2011. The new features in Pure include a file shredder, Disaster recovery, a more advanced PC Security Tune-up, and more importantly a Password Manager. The Password manager is a feature that saves all usernames and passwords to all your web sites in one location called The Password Manager. You only need to remember/use one password to control the Password manager which in turn allows you to use it for all your password websites. Its a nice feature which is not included 2011, thus the reason for one to spend a little more for Pure, ...about $30 US more.

After running a 30 trial of Pure, I believe its worth the extra dough for people that don't already have programs that have the features that Pure provides such as Full Image Backup. If you don't have these key applications than Pure without a doubt is for you.

Well, back to 2011, the main UI is quite boring if you ask me. They did away with the scanner, which was just for looks and served no purpose except to link to the Protection state window. The Protection Window can be found by clicking on any one of the many links KIS provides. Some features were moved around like Vulnerability scanner, it was moved from the Scan Window to the Tools Window. It has improved on its "Sandbox" feature with a new Tab called "Safe Run" which includes the quick links to safe internet browsing or PC Program Safe Run. When using the Safe Run Applications, your desktop basically becomes a full on safe zone. And lets not forget about the virtual keyboard which allows you to enter info on websites without touching a key on your keyboard. Point and click on the keyboard window and key-logging can't be done!

I've been running K-Lab's KIS for many years and every new release is a surprise in the UI's and added features, but this time, Kaspersky decided to keep 2011 a bit primitive so as to attract people to the more costly new product, that is "Pure" imho.

One cool item found with 2011 that I don't believe is in Pure is a Sidebar Gadget. This Gadget is very useful with two programmable buttons (Limited to what K-Lab has provided), that from a drop down can be changed to open most any KIS feature window with one click. It keeps you informed when a scan or update is taking place and of course if there are any problems such as out of date virus definitions, virus, spyware, etc. Also with the Gadget comes two different looks and you can run two instances of it with running the same or different style types.

View attachment 82998

All in all, As a KIS 2010 user, I find 2011 to be about the same with next to no new features with the exception of the sidebar gadget.

As far as protection, Kaspersky has always done a great job in preventing any malware to even get onto your PC. Goto a phishing webpage and KIS will stop it from loading and with a pop-up to let you know that this website is unsafe. I've always have had good luck with K-Lab Protection and I find it to be one of the best retail PC Protection available.

But don't just take my word, do some searching or goto your favorite PC Products review sites and read what some of the pro's are saying about Kaspersky Products.

For more info on Kaspersky Features and products, please visit any or all of the following websites. From the Pure Webpage, click on the comparison icon link, and it will sum up the differences between the products.

KIS 2011:
Internet Security Software 2010 for Home Computer Security - Kaspersky Lab United States
Pure:
Antivirus Products for Home Users

Please note, that at this time, Pure is not officially released in US yet, so make sure if you do some browsing at Kaspersky that at the top you select "Global" from the location drop down.

thanks for this - i'm a KIS man myself, been using it for a few years now since my online bank started giving it away free. :)

current users of kis2010 (or indeed any version higher than 6.0) with time still remaining on their license can upgrade for no extra charge.

the software won't auto-update itself, you have to go and download it. you can just install over the top of previous version, but it may be neater to uninstall first, but you will lose any custom anti-spam data and activation settings this way.

kaspersky website said:
Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 offers a number of new and improved features together with unique protection technologies to address the latest online threats, keep your PC or Netbook running smoothly and customize protection according to your activities:

  • Improved: Risk-based Application Control restricts programs’ rights to access potentially vulnerable system resources or share sensitive data on the Internet
  • New: System Watcher - Heuristics-based analysis monitors, restricts and blocks suspicious program behavior
  • Improved: Safe Run mode launches questionable applications and websites without risk
  • Improved: Rescue CD disinfects the system after malware attacks
  • New: Safe Run for websites mode provides added security for online banking and other similar activities where a high risk of identity theft exists
  • Improved: Advanced antimalware technologies even allows installation on infected PCs
  • New: New System Watcher technology tracks, records and analyzes suspicious activity and lets you roll back any dangerous actions
  • New: Safe Surf technology blocks malware and phishing websites for great online security

Hello Mickey, Your Welcome fellow K-Lab User,

Yes thats true that Kaspersky allows free upGRADES to their newest releases of the same product. Many others as far as I know don't provide this to there customers. Also you are correct in stating it is always best to un-install the current version before installing any new version even if it is the same product.

Kaspersky Internet Suite (KIS) has comprehensive application control. The options to allow programs internet access or not is just one of the many options in application control. In fact here's a screen-shot of some of the control Kaspersky can do for most any application on your PC. Its like, ..."Why would I want notepad Internet access, ...Well simply block its access to the net". And the below shot is showing all the options under just the one tab. There are others that modify access even more.

There are a few places one can go to get the latest upgrades, one is the official K-Lab Products Page, and another being their "Dev" catalog.

Depending where you live, you won't always find an upgrade listed while you have chosen your home country. Currently if I chose the US, "Pure" is not available, however if I chose "Global" its listed.

Here are some of the many places to obtain Kaspersky Products:

Official Releases can be found on Kasperskys main web site under products:

Product Updates

Notice when looking at the above web page near the top for country, it says Global. If you wish to see only products currently released in your country, use the drop-down and select. Also, in the left pane there's a link to trials where you can download any product and evaluate it for 30 days.

Here is a link to the "dev" builds page. Be careful when downloading from here as some products are in beta testing and are not supported by Kaspersky Support. Only Products DL'ed from there official Products page are supported.

Dev Products:

Index of /devbuilds/

I'm currently running 11.0.1.399, and now I see they released a new beta version again, .400. As far as beta versions go, new ones come out often. Unless your having a problem I wouldn't bother un-installing and reinstalling for every new beta version released. As you can see from the list, it happens a lot.

I'm still not sure if I'll stick with 2011 or go over to there new product "Pure". Its not officially available in US (but still obtainable) its just I have time on my 2011 key that I'd hate to waste as it is NOT possible to use KIS/KAV keys on Pure. Also, much of the features that Pure has that 2011 doesn't, I have from other 3rd party applications such as file and drive shredder, cCleaner.

What I don't have and would be worth the purchase of Pure is there Password Manager. It not only saves PW's, but your name, address, phone #, etc, ...most all the info that you might need to fill out when working online. It remembers the webpage and its required requested info for you and so its a click away to fully complete the info required.

Good Luck, Be Safe -n- Secure and most importantly have Fun!

long live Kaspersky! i've been a kav user many years ago and just switched to kis around 3 years ago. i've never had any problem with kis that's why i am a loyal patron. used different antivirus software before but viruses can still infect my pc and sometimes were a resource hog. kis is one of the best, if not the best. according to reviews, MSE is great and is free but i'll still stick to kaspersky. kaspersky gives me a peace of mind. :D

I am also a huge Kaspersky fan after years of using the others Norton, MCafee currently using KIS 2010 I downloaded the 2011 version and installed it but had several problems with programs not working correctly, so I reverted back to 2010, I am not sure now if I did a fresh install or an in place installation.

I know it was 2011 causing the problems because as soon as I turned it off the programs worked fine again, might try a fresh installation and see if that helps or not.

Hmmmm just done a fresh installation of KIS 2011 and have the exact same problems with an essential program I use and since there are no updates for my program It looks like I will just have to stick with KIS 2010 after all said and done if it ain't broken don't fix it and from what I have seen there is not too much new things in there to justify me using it and sacrificing using an essential program for me. Here is the error I get anyway...

hmm, i've just done a clean install of 7, and decided to try out the new kaspersky.

i was curious to see if my wei score had improved since the last installation.

imagine my surprise when i see an error message.

i've got all the updates and latest drivers.

i remember months ago, kis had a problem with wei. i wonder if they've reintroduced it?

i'm not too bothered by this, it's a trivial issue after all. i can't be asked uninstalling kis and trying wei again.

no other problems with kis 2011...yet...

maybe this problem has nothing to do with kis either...

i am interested if any other kis 2011 users can run wei?

Works like it always used to now.

Steve

Hi Steve,

Not sure adding program to the exclusion list would be my first choice, although as long as the properties of that exclusion is still to scan the program you should be fine. It might be that KIS has placed that program in the untrusted or restricted group in Application Control. Please go to settings\application control\ click on Applications. In the Applications window, see where KIS placed that program you had to add to exclusions. If it is a program that you trust and its not in the trusted group, highlight program and choose move to and select trusted. Your application should now be listed under the trusted folder drop down either in the manufactures folder or directly in the trusted folder itself.

Again, I don't think its dangerous to place app in exclusions as long as program is still being scanned (while in the exclusions window\trusted applications tab, highlight your app and click "edit" for the settings to it, but its not the first thing I would do if you haven't looked into where KIS placed the app in application control.

Good Luck,
OEM

Yes, at one time KIS did interfere with the PC Rating, however thats been corrected a long time ago and is working fine here. It didn't improve my rating either  lol.

On a different note, there is a separate website from K-Lab called Kaspersky Fan Club. Its where all the chatting goes, and more importantly skins! Lots of Skins! On the main forum, watch out for Don Petroles, he's a very hard noised old timer who know his stuff, but hates any nonsense of any kind and likes to enforce ALL rules and is fast to stop any Highjinks.

Thats another reason to enjoy KIS as they allow for people to create and distribute all kinds of different UI appearances and even sometimes add new functions/buttons. An example would be network blocker, there was a skin for 2010 that put the link to block all network activity right on the main ui. There were skins that also allowed to adjust and stop auto rootkit scans. KIS was running rootkit scans all the time in the background slowing PC's down, yet there was no way to stop this until someone made skins that included control over the rootkit scans.

As far as skins for 2011 or Pure, it's too early yet to see a lot skin choices, but give it time and look to a user named Pipkin, his skins are the best and he makes a lot of them. They can be downloaded from his blog section without having to create an account on the Fan Club site.

Hi OEM I have done as you suggested and moved it to a trusted application however I will not have time today to test it out as I am off on a road trip with my sisters, but I will try it this evening when I get back :)

OK I have a little time on my hands and have just tried to run the program after placing it in the trusted group and it seems to be running ok :) Good news.

I wanted to ask about my "Utorrent" program as I am having the same problems with that, I want KIS 2011 to scan it when it is in use but I also want to be able to use it what group should that be placed in ?
