The general feeling this is just a back up of all the updates of the system since issue,

As someone who has auto updates running all the time, do I really need it.?

A service pack neednt be dramatic. XP SP3 was very boring- in sharp contrast to the highly security-update oriented SP2. For most home users, win7 SP1 will ensure they are up to date with all MS patches and fixes released till now and also some unreleased ones.

"Notable changes" in SP1 as documented by MS are improved HDMI performance, corrected behavior in the printing of mixed orientation XPS documents (i.e. both portrait and landscape) and improvement in "Restore previous folders at logon" functionality.

if you always performed updates on a regular basis, it's not really like you need it bad (as you would need SP2 for XP some years ago).. But anyway I suggest you to install it (unless you have serious reasons not to do so, reasons of which I can't recall any at the moment).

It contains also updates/fixes that have not been released individually (as far as I know, at least) so yes, you'd better install it.

The thing is I've tried to install it 5 times on my 32bit system keep getting the same error 0x800070490.

Tried a Repair, System for update rediness, switched off MSE, failure after each.

Yet my 64bit system no problem.

And yes, I did use the right downloads

I find it astonishing that Microsoft can release something that fails on so many pcs. Ive done 2 out of 3 - SP1 nearly kills the one it fails on which, quite frankly is laughable. With so many reports of failures on installation it's obvious theyve made a right mess of this

The problem with blameing MS for the problems people are haveing with the SP1 is they don't know what your configureation is, whether you already had problems before you tried to install it. Read alittle bit and fix some of the issues you have, as in were you using SP1 beta, is MSE on the latest version, just a couple things that could be causeing the problem. Microsoft is not always the problem.:(

for me personally- i dont touch betas and have never used MSE

i have virtually the same configuration/software on all pcs yet it fails on one. The fact that so many are having problems - and some really serious problems too like breaking windows completely - would suggest that this SP is actually very dangerous for some users and best avoided until Microsoft can release a revised SP

Computers are never the same. There is always something different.
As the saying goes garbage in, garbage out.

This is why I always reinstall clean then install a service pack as the first thing or use integrated media.
It avoids the garbage in, garbage out problems.

No troubles here perhaps because installing clean has always been my policy. It will usually help avoid a bit of trouble.
