It's been six days since I first contacted M$ and after exchanging several emails (with days waits in between) all they've done is told me to look at their KB article, which I was already familiar with.

You do not have the option of downloading Windows 7 SP1 when you use Windows Update to check for updates

The article seems to imply that as long as you install KB2454826 even if you have the Intel driver you would be offered SP1. I installed KB2454826 manually and that's not the case. M$ should redo that article.

So I found your and indychics posts and now am sure it is the Intel driver causing the issue. But I'm a little leery about changing drivers.

I understand your concern and as I said I have not been able to try indychic's fix yet. Before indy found the fix I DID uninstall said driver this was before I knew of the generic driver from Intel. I wanted to see what effect it had and all it did was make my screen look funky BUT I could still see. To get the driver back to the way it was I just did a system restore and all was well. Post back if you do try the fix and steps you took if you don't mind and I will do the same when I finally get a chance.

I just heard from M$ and they again mention the article KB2498452 and the Intel driver. Just for my sanity how do you interpret this:

Windows 7 SP1 will not appear in Windows Update if update 2454826 is not installed. Windows Update will not offer you update KB2454826 if you are using one of the following Intel integrated graphics drivers:

Igdkmd32.sys (32-bit), versions 8.15.10.2104 through 8.15.10.2141
Igdkmd64.sys (64-bit), versions 8.15.10.2104 through 8.15.10.2141

My view is that if you were following this as long as you installed update 2454826 you will be offered SP1 even if you have the Intel driver. Obviously that is not true and I have told M$ they should change the article. Yea right!!

I told them no update for the driver is available from my manufacturer and apparently others as well but there is one available from Intel. I asked if they could let HP and others know so they can let their customers know. Again I don't hold out hope.

We'll see what they say next but it seems unless I update the driver directly from Intel this won't get resolved.

What irks me is the article they keep referring to. Maybe I am interpreting it wrong but I think they need to change it.

Yeah that's how I would read it as well:sarc: I have notified Microsoft on the "did this help" section at the bottom of said article but they have not changed it in two weeks so far. I am not holding out for HP OR Microsoft to do much I think we are going to have to manually install the generic Intel driver.

I believe indychic had our problem PLUS she had an additional problem where she installed a ATI graphics card in which she had to temporally pull so that she could update the Intel driver so that SP1 would even been seen.

Hi guys.

@Tech - You are correct. I had the same problem plus I pulled my ATI graphics card manually so it would detect the generic Intel driver my PC came with.

@everyone else-
I will add that I had all the KB updates already in WINDOWS UPDATE however it would not show SP1 there because of the generic Driver. Again, if you try my method (which it works for me 100%) and there is a problem you can System Restore and/or go back to the driver your PC came with. This is exactly the method Dell told me on a forum and I followed it with NO problems! HP cannot be any different. The reason you are not getting SP1 is because you have a generic out of date INTEL driver. My PC is working great with SP1 since I did the method that I am relaying here.

Also, my PC is fairly new and I cannot understand why these PC people cannot add the new INTEL driver on the website ie; Dell. It's a waste of time and frustration to have to figure this out on our own when they could have just added the new driver to the website. Grrr.

One more thing @ BRU - Yes I did get that message you are stating. You are getting that message because you are installing from INTEL and not HP.

* If anyone does this method please post back with your results. Thanks!

Well I finally applied indy's fix and it worked great!! I now have the option to download SP1. I am going to hold off a bit to actually install SP1 but at least it is there for me when I am ready. I did notice after upgrading the Intel driver that I was once again offered KB2454826 which in of course needed to even get SP1. I had already downloaded and installed 2454826 back in January but I took the it again anyway. Did they reissue this update at a later date? Anyway thanks again indychic!

After roughly six weeks of knowing that the Intel Graphics Driver was preventing SP1 from appearing in WU and HOPING HP and/or Intel would do something I followed the instructions and installed the updated driver.

I had to manually check for updates but sure enough there is SP1. As of yet I have not installed it.

If I had listened to Microsoft I would have reinstalled the OS for my computer. HP and Intel blame each other for not having an updated driver available. The whole situation is ridiculous. I imagine there are thousands of computers that will never be offered this update.

Great thread - Solved it for me!

I was having the same problem with an Acer Aspire 7741Z not giving me Windows 7 SP1 in the WU check. I also had the Acer HD Graphics Driver Intel 8.15.10.2119 installed on a copy of Windows 7 64bit Home Edition on the laptop. I followed Indychic's advice and now have the latest Intel HD driver installed and WIN7 SP1 with no apparent problems noticed to date!

Thank you so much Indychic for taking the time to post this for us.

I also ran into the problem with Intel HD driver to contact Acer for a driver but when I uninstalled it from the remove programs feature from the Windows Control panel it let me install the latest driver. Immediately after a reboot of the driver installation I checked Windows update for SP1 and viola it was there! Installed with no problems.

The two things I find curious is Intel should tell you that you must uninstall the previous driver before trying to update it rather than giving you the cryptic message:
"Product Detected Intel HD Graphics
Current Driver Installed 8.15.10.2119

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer"

This message goes away if you uninstall the previous driver as mentioned by Indychic first. This must also explain the reason why the latest driver does not show up in the Windows Device Manager when trying to update the driver as it will not uninstall the previous driver. Go figure!

The other weird thing that I have a hard time fathoming is how a video driver prevents SP1 from showing up in Windows Update but it does!

One final note. I installed Intel HD Graphics Driver 8.15.10.2342 which was the latest driver listed.

Thanks all for a great thread! If it wasn't for people like you sharing this info I would have pulled all my hair out by now!

Hello is there anyone out there who can help with this problem please of being unable to install SP1 due to Graphics Driver?
I have just hit this problem. Wanted to install IE-10 but cant because havent got SP1; cant install SP1 because of driver problem.
There is some kind of 'fix' for this in the about chain in this forum, but the link to the driver on the Intel website now fails.
Can anyone tell me what the correct link now is, or how to decide which driver from Intel I should choose. HP still do not seem to be offering any newer driver; unbelieveable.
What about going a roundabout route to get SP1 from Microsoft by means other than Windows Update? Would it work? Would I hit the same problem with the driver? Thanks for any help, regards
