I'm building a new office PC and want to try putting the OS and Office on an SSD.

Being a "belt and suspenders man" I want to have an alternate way to operate the computer should the SSD prove troublesome.

The machine will have a120 GB SSD for the Win 7 OS and Office, A 500 GB HDD for data and a second 1TB HDD for backup images.

My plan is to install Win 7 on the 500 GB drive in a 120 GB partition. The remaining 380 GB will be for data. I will then disconnect the 500 GB drive and do the working install and update of Win 7 and Office on the 120 GB SSD. The 500 GB HDD will then be reconnected and the BIOS set to boot from the SSD.

I intend to image the working 120 GB SSD to the 120 GB partition of the HDD with Clonzilla to carry over all the programs, updates and keep it fresh.
To see if the imaged OS and programs works I'll change the boot sequence in the
BIOS.

Does this sound like a workable plan? Will Win 7 get confused with two copies on the same machine on different drives?

Thanks in advance,

Mort

Sounds like too much for me to be honest.

Windows backup does a System image and can be backed up onto another drive. But if your partition was 120gig and you backup onto a 500gb UN-partitioned drive you will find yourself with the 500gb partitioned 120gb for windows and the rest blank.

I think if you do a regular windows backup with a system image and your SSD does fail then your have the backup ready for the 120gb partition.
