Hi,
Oh shoot I also have the box Uncheck to Give me recommended updates the same as Important ones,
That way all Recommended updates are listed in the Optional section not in the Important section,
Most recommended updates should be reviewed by the individual to see if they apply to their environment
Same goes for Optional updates,

I'm not sure what you mean on the last part could you explain a bit more ?

Coming to dell drivers order... Notebook, Chipset, Video, Audio, etc is that order fine after W7 and Office updates?

If a category says Important then that's all I want listed there not recommended ones as well they should be listed in the Optional section,
But I review all updates before downloading and installing them,
Most smart people take it a bit further and wait a week and see if others are having issues with some of those optional/ recommended updates,

These reports can be seen in the News section or windows updates section @ sevenforums

I just installed windows on my new Sabertooth, now that there are 205 updates to start with vs the original 180, you have to read every optional update and any update that doesn`t say it`s a security update, it sucks but what are you gonna do. It didn`t take me long at all, you don`t need every update MS puts out.

DO NOT have windows update set to Auto, set it to check for updates, but let you decide whether or not to install them.

Not sure what size your new ssd is, but the whole thing should be 1 partition dedicated to windows and your programs, store your data on a hard drive.

If you did not align the ssd before you installed windows, you can always check and fix it afterwards.

This is how you check, and the offset has to be divisible by 4.

Any questions, just ask.

Trim should be enabled by default. You should check it after the installation is complete, as you should check alignment (offset evenly divisible by 4) and defragmentation (off for SSD, on for other drives).

I would NOT "allow install updates automatically".

The chipset driver should be installed first; after that the order isn't critical.

I probably would not use a Dell drivers disk, if that is what you are referring to. Let Windows supply drivers wherever possible.

Updates are generally divided into critical, important, recommended, and optional.

I'd get all critical and important, but do them in batches, not all at once.

I probably would NOT get "optional" updates unless the provided details specifically applied to some aspect of Windows that I used. For instance, some say they are related to laptops--why apply them to a desktop machine?

Similarly, I might accept a "recommended" update if it directly applied to my situation.

I would be reluctant to accept new drivers offered UNLESS I was having hardware problems that the new driver was specifically intended to resolve or UNLESS the new driver somehow related to security. My general philosophy about drivers is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". If your hardware is working OK, it ain't broke.

"Patch Tuesday" is the second Tuesday of each month, when a lot of updates are offered. You might wait to the following weekend before accepting any of them to avoid the possibility that some are problematic. The problematic ones are usually discovered within a day or two and replaced quickly. If you waited to the weekend, you might avoid some issues.

Hi TharshZone must be asleep,

My lap's desktop's WEI improved. Net is probably the same but hard drive is up from 5.9 to 6.9.

Not a real big difference but I feel the boot is much faster, not bad for SATA II.

Do I need to run some tests on it?

Yes, DISKPART is run in command prompt, just type what I typed, hit enter after each command.

Thanks for explaining and the offset should be 1024, correct?

Your offset could be different, but whatever it is, on the kilobyte level, the offset has to be divisible by 4.

If you have a system reserved partition for example, it could come up different, I don`t use a SR partition.

In my example above, there is only 1 partition on the ssd, and the ssd is the only drive hooked up to that system, that`s why I selected Disk 0.

If the disk you were checking was disk 1 or 2 or 3 etc, you would type select disk 1, 2 , or 3 etc.

Reason for split was that I hardly use 35 GB for W7 and all apps, does it make a difference in performance, can they be merged?

I have 1 program that needs this weird type of frame work "CorelDraw x6" mostly for it's internet content of which I don't even use but a lot of programs are using .net to deliver internet content.

A couple of the Optional you show might take care of the yellow flag you were referring to
But out of the Optional updates I would load these in green,

Don't bother Hiding Silverlight it just shows back up so hiding it really accomplishes nothing
The only company/ s that uses Silverlight is M$ for it's help videos and I believe Netflix to stream content.

Skype is self explanatory you either use it or not of which I don't so I don't load anything Skype related personally.

Yea I agree the D partition doesn't make much sense to me either I do limit space on C but I leave the remainder as Unallocated so I can increase C if necessary later.

What was your intent by having D on the SSD? What did you hope to accomplish?

You can easily do away with D and give that space to C, but we need to understand your motivations. Maybe you had a good reason for D, although I can't imagine what it would be if all data is on the 320 GB external.

You could get rid of System Reserved, but at this point there's no real point to doing that. As previously explained, the best time to avoid System Reserved is before you install Windows.

This is only partially true. It seems to come back because of newer versions being offered. After you hide all the versions, they will not be back until a new version is out. Then you can hide it and be done with it.
