I recently got an SSD to run my OS out of. I would like to leave all my files behind on the old drive but still be able to run all my programs from the new drive. There will be a few programs I want on the new drive which I will manually install but most of my programs (like iTunes) I would like the install location to stay as my old drive but run it from the new SSD. How would I go about doing that? Not sure if I described my goal properly, feel free to ask for clarification. Thanks!

Hi welcome to SF

from what i understand you will not be able to use exsisting programs for the hard drive when you install the SSD drive with windows on it. when you installed the programs it has writen things to the registery. so you will need to reinstall all the programs for them to work properly.

That will not work. It is not only the registry but also the .dlls, junctions, etc. You have to reinstall those programs on the SSD - and you should to get the performance gain.

Your data is a different matter. That you can INCLUDE in the libraries from any place.

So no way to transfer and update the registry and .dlls and what not?

So how would I reinstall the programs while keeping all the previous data and settings? Like iTunes, all the music, backups, etc. How would I transfer all that over? I want to keep all of this data on the old drive...

You have to differentiate between programs and data. Data files are no problem. They can reside any place. Programs have to be reinstalled and whatever settings you made will have to be redone too.
