SSD, Readyboost and upgrading my RAM

Hi all,

I just purchased a new SSD and I am in love beyond all reason. It's not normal to love an inanimate object as much as I do this drive. But I do, and I'm OK with that.

I was wondering, I have a 16Gb flash stick that I usually used for RB. But have heard some recent discussion that RB is a "relic" from when "RAM was a commodity". RAM hasn't been a commodity for years, even before RB was popular. So, any harm in putting a 16G stick in my system and using it as RB? How about buying an internal card reader and using a high end SD card for RB? Or, is it "Forget RB dude...it's pointless at your given system specs"

Lastly, I want to upgrade my RAM anyway, I currently have 8Gb of this RAM and would like to bump it up to 16Gb - sticking with G.SKILL (maybe this?) because, IMO they are the best right now.

Please take note of my motherboard. I believe the RAM to be compatible, but I could be missing something.

Hello Norwood Mate first Readyboost never works as "RAM" it only acts as a cache for data and if my memory (excuse he pun) serves me right not much chop beyond 2GB anyway . So dump it now .

More proper RAM is what you need and seeing as you have G Skill already go to Welcome to the G.SKILL TECH FORUM talk to Tradesman he is the man on memory and will fix you up. He helped me and many friends with choosing RAM to suit the needs and boards.

You can't go wrong.

Congrats on the new SSD. I know I love mine. I don't know what you do with the computer, but for normal usage, 8 GB is plenty. In fact, is probably more than you would ever use. Unless you are using all 8 GB, 16 will do you no good.

Absolutely my Ivy is running 8GB at 1866 and currently rarely goes above 28% usage.

I just thought the info for getting kits and stuff that actually matched the board from that forum was excellent and to help Norwood not wasting his money is just why I referred him there because I used to be a bit of a mix and match merchant. I'm not bring disloyal to this forum if I gave that impression.

Most, I think, disable Superfetch when they install an SSD, and if Superfetch is disabled, then Readyboost will be disabled too. I have heard conflicting reports on whether or not to disable Superfetch, but I do know the software for my Intel X25-M and my Samsung 830 says to disable it.

Also, like mentioned aboved...unless you are getting close to using all 8GB, don't waste the money upgrading it to 16GB........you won't see any difference.

ReadyBoost essentially uses a flash drive as a disk cache. RAM is much faster than any flash drive and thus provides a better cache. The problem is that on systems with limited memory, less than 2 GB, there just isn't enough for an efficient cache. Since flash drives have better seek performance than conventional drives they can make an effective cache.

A cache must have better performance characteristics than the device holding the data that is being cached. Otherwise it isn't a cache at all and is at best useless. Is your 16 GB flash drive faster than the SSD? I would rather doubt it.

ReadyBoost provides the greatest benefits on systems with slow hard drives and limited RAM. In your case neither is true. ReadyBoost will not improve performance, it may well impair it.

I have disabled Superfetch once I installed the disk and did some other tweaks as well. Quick boot and modified some other registry entries.

Just to ensure that Superfetch wasn't working, I inserted an 8Gb USB drive and attempted to enable Readyboost. It would not allow me to so kbrady1979's assessment is correct.

Readyboost for OP is pretty much useless with that rig, just piling on.

On the other hand, I am using RB on a Vista-32 laptop that happens to have a built in SD slot, with a 10 rated 4 gig SD card, and it is a godsend for that laptop, with an unfortunate max 2gig of RAM.
