SSD stopped being recognized

Hi,
Yesterday i was playing mass effect 3 until i got tired and went to sleep, shutting my computer down on the way.
Today, i turned my computer on, and it wouldn't boot. Then after a restart i noticed that my SSD wasn't being recognized by the marvell controller. The bios also won't recognize it. I tried replugging the sata and power cables, with no results.

What can i do? I have no idea on how to start.

Have you tried using it in another computer, or putting it into an external enclosure and seeing if it powers up and is recognized?

Also allow the system to completely power down (unplug it) and reset the bios. (or just the escd if the bios allows for that)

I have tried setting it to IDE Compatible mode with no good results. I have also plugged it into an USB Controller, but the computer in question wouldn't recognize that also. I reset the bios as well. Nothing so far.

One more thing, it can't have died right? It was powered down the whole time, it can't die if it has no power? Or can it?

To be honest my experience with ssd's is fairly recent and new so I don't think I can really answer that question outside of saying 'anything is possible'
My guess would be it happened at the moment power was cut if that is the case.

I would also scrutinize your power supply to make sure it's functioning properly in that scenario.

The problem here is we can't even run diagnostics on it if we can't get the motherboard to see it.


...and unlike a mechanical you can't even check to see if it's still spinning.

The SSD isn't even a month old

Did you update the firmware on your M4 SSD??

The new firmware 0309 corrects the problem where an incorrect response to a SMART counter will cause the m4 drive to become unresponsive after 5184 hours of Power-on time.


EDIT: Just noticed where you say its only a month old, so you could not have enough hours up time to be affected

It is possible the SSD died, another member here had his 128GB M4 just go poof!

You say you have it connected to the Marvell controller; move it to one of the SATA III Intel based controller where it will be running off the Z68 chipset. Worth a try.

I have tried running it in both Sata III and Sata II. Nothing worked

Speaking of which, if its really dead, is there any way i can recover some of the data inside or is it lost?

I have one last suggestion for you, this has effected me personally and two of my friends.
Go out, and spend the few extra dollars to make sure you have a sata III rated cable on the drive. Many of these drives come with fancy looking cables but some of them are not actually rated.

Well, the good thing is that you can get it replaced - it'll be under warranty. If you can't get it to power up and be recognized, then your data can't be recovered.

I had a similar problem the other day witn an OCZ Vertex. It worked perfectly and when I rebooted it was dead. I stuck it into an enclosure and attached it to another system. When checking in Disk Management, the partition was RAW. That was the end of it. We RMAd it.

Hey guys, good news! A power cycle fixed my issue, i recovered everything plus i don't have to deal with RMA!!!
Power Cycle: Turn on the SSD for 20 minutes, and shut it down for 30 seconds, repeat three times.

Hmm, that is quite a new approach. We will have to retain this.

Reminds me how to fix failing HDDs - you put them into the fridge over night. Works in most cases.

I'm recently new to SSDs but....
The latest firmware which fixes a major bug for Crucial M4s as mentioned is the recently released 0309 not the 009 which yours was shipped with. Follow the Crucial instructions carefully to upgrade and don't use the Marvel ports but the first Intel Sata 3 (6Gb/s) port.
