My understanding is that Prime95 runs numerous large or small Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs). These are very defined computational algorithms. Some RAM testing is also carried out. If you get an error I'd also be running MEMTEST86 or the like.
Yes, this is true. Still, I see no need to run a stress test for 12-24 hours. Especially since 99.9 percent of users aren't going to be running the calculations or programs a stress test brings. And for the one percent that do need such a system, they aren't they types of systems we're playing with. Anyway I know the community is mixed/split on this so...
That said, for those of us building/completing a new system (me), and even if you don't intend to overclock (me), I'd still suggest running a stress test like AIDA64 for a minimum of an hour just to make sure the base system is stable, and that there isn't anything wrong with hardware such as CPU cooler, CPU, memory, or GPU. usually if something is going to happen, it's going to happen within the first hour of the test.
