Supervirus

Best option. I suggest that next time, you use your PC correctly because in order to get such a strong virus you must be dealing with (torrents, illegally downloaded music, "adult" videos, illegal software keygen/license numbers, etc)....that IS what gets people in trouble with viruses.

Although what you suggest is indeed often a source of malware, people can also be infected when they are completely innocent of any wrongdoing, so one has to be careful about making sweeping statements like this.

Most of the viruses that infect people's computers are often because they either cannot use a PC properly, or they don't have the appropriate protection against them. You're right, sometimes we can't control what we are exposed to, but the right use of a computer, dramatically reduces the chances of getting one.

I don't basically disagree with that. One just has to be careful when addressing such things not to brand people as stupid, incompetent, or indeed guilty of wrongdoing.

We are here to help people if we can, not to castigate them for not knowing something, inadvertently doing something they shouldn't have, or having problems caused by things beyond their control or knowledge.

Of course, if somebody is using cracked or pirated software, there is no point in trying to help them, and it is in any case against forum rules.

Basically they have asked for trouble and got it.

If I were you I'd buy a new hard drive.

Its easier to format, less expensive too.

I have experience such problem before, a format didn't help me at all, at last I bought a new hard drive.

I agree that formatting does not always solve the problem. My brother had the hhd infected with a virus once. Not even full format gave way to it. However, after a low-level formatting my brother had no more news of that virus. Thus, talking about buying a new hdd is too early.

I managed to format the hdd I had problem with but the laptop was not functioning as it used to afterwards. I spent a lot of time on it trying to figure out how to improve it.
But yes a format could be worth a try.

If I were you I'd buy a new hard drive.

And I thought my reformat suggestion was extreme. If done correctly sir, a reformat would almost always (I would not say always because I may have to take back what I said) solve the problem. One mentioned that even after a reformat, the virus still persisted. Was that a correct format sir? Maybe the person only formatted the C drive - not the other drives. Even if you reformat drive C, and the other drives have viruses, you would still catch them no matter how many times you format drive C. If the TS has a copy of genuine win7 and has no problems with a reformat, I suggest he/she should reformat the machine. It is the most extreme option but it is WAY cheaper than buying another HDD.

And also, I would be careful next time when I would say that the TS is downloading torrents, having keygens and other stuff because he/she might have contracted the virus in some other way. Have you seen my signature? I scanned a customer's USB drive and caught those nasties. Of course, the original source for the viruses would have been from torrents, keygens and others but what if I did not have Kaspersky installed and I just opened the USB drive? I would also be infected by those nasties. Bottom line, he/she might have been infected by a USB drive he/she inserted when he/she does not have adequate protection.

cheers!

... and if there's too much stress on the computer in safe mode (like notepad) then it will crash.

Sounds like a hardware problem, not a virus. If stress causes the PC to crash, it may be a component getting too hot.

You bought the laptop used. Is the fan working? Are the vents clogged with dust? Laptops aren't the easiest things to clean, so it may require popping open the case to properly clean the heatsinks.

Hmmmmmm...interesting...

Before you start reading, I'd like to request you to take patience as I have included links that are important to your current problem. Just bear with me and read on. I know it it very difficult when you are hit with what's happening but to resolve it will require a bit more patience and effort.

Don't buy/replace anything just yet as mentioned.

Have you actually run anything yet as to determine if you really have a virus or not? Are you really infected?

(a) The Avira rescue cd is a good one. Dr. Web Live CD is also a good one too. There is a Superantispyware portable that can be loaded on to a USB stick and will run once it is inserted. Just go to a rental shop or internet cafe download it and have it burned there. Pop it in the cd drive.

The first thing that you have to acomplish you should be able to confirm "if" you are really infected or not. You will have to go out of your way to get a "rescue cd" or "USB stick" for a boot-scan to be performed.

How to use AntiVir Rescue System

Avira Rescue System Booting from USB stick

Dr. Web LiveCD

SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner

Removing Viruses from a PC That Won’t Boot

Now if you are infected, those suggested live cd/rescue system will get rid of it and allow you to boot normally. From there you will have to scan again for remnants either in SafeMode or normal Windows mode. Most incidences of infestations will require you to perfom a repair install(that is if you got pretty banged-out due to infection). But if the pc is "cleaned" (after AV scans and 2nd/3rd on-demand scanners + your pc is okay then you can now go for system imaging).

(b) While reformatting is suggested and there is a Windows 7 cd available (you can request a recovery cd from the manufacturer), I'd go for a full DOD-wipe. Low level formatting cannot get rid of MBR viruses. It will stil be there.

Seagate Seatools (ISO image to be burned to a cd) / Seagate DiscWizard /Acronis True Image for WD has very good wiping capability and it's free to use. It can work with non-Seagate drives. The workaround is when the “No Seagate/Maxtor drive detected error” screen appears, press and hold the “Alt” key, then type the two letters “to” (for tech override), then click the “OK” button. Then DiskWizard opens fine these directions are direct from the Seagate tech support forum.

Plus when you get up and running from this "nightmare", you can use it (DiscWizard/ATI-WD edition) to make an system image backups and (if possible) never have to reformat again. Paragon has this capability also. Full wipe would be better than low level format.

Links are here:

Hardware Level Virus on Laptop

Seagate DisWizard

Seagate Forums on DiscWizard

Western Digital forum on DiscWizard and ATi-WD edition

Later you can ask SIW2 about Paragon apps.

Some good read here:

Am I Infected? What Do I Do?

Using Knoppix and Clam Anti-virus to Scan Infected PCs

After you have resurrected from your nightmare and your laptop is functioning okay, you might consider reading this:

Securing Your PC and Data

Download the attachment there and adapt it.

The previous focuses on "infection". BUT IF YOU ARE NOT infected, then diagnostic tools is what you need.

Good luck:D

I will certainly chime in with Mike on this! I was reinstalling XP and as SOON as it was internet capable, I had a virus. started over and installed norton Security before plugging in the ethernet.

Badware writers are geting as savvy as those who try to protect us. With exploits, CSS injection and the like, "proper use" just isn't enough.

The OP's sytem specs has one entry, OS idk. I don't know. Can't add to much help with that info.

Hopefully he will return with results too. Just noticed it has been 3 days.:(
