Afternoon. My recent fresh install is having trouble with a svchost process.

After a fresh boot its fine and im really unsure of what triggers this to happen.

After some time of web browsing (Chrome) and listening to WMC the HDD light will start blinking constantly and my CPU temps go up, only to notice my CPU usage is at 100% almost. The svchost services are: Power, Plug and Play and DCOM Server process launcher.

I cannot stop this until i restart the PC even a log off doesnt stop it.

Ive heard other people have this trouble but no real solutions.

My USB devices work fine, just when this svchost starts acting up, then ANY new USB device i plug in doesnt get recognised nor do they work.

This happens every time i use my PC eventually, i cannot work out what triggers this to happen. TODAY only my USB devices i used before this happened was just my iPhone to copy a few pictures from. That's all

However this has happened without using my iPhone and not plugging anything new in.

Got any fans in that case or on the video card not working?

Sounds like a possible Heat issue, also if that power supply is OLD, consider replacing, I'd go higher, so you have room to grow, with a 500W, and over time they degrade, you might have hit the point of needing it replaced.

Thats strange, its a brand new case i put in and all fans are working fine.

Ive got SpeedFan running at startup which lowers my fans to half auto and my CPU temp idles at about 38c now the whethers got warmer here.

The highest it has been is maybe 52c.

The PSU is only just turning a year old.

Did that motherboard claim USB 3.0 or have a CD with USB specific drivers on it?

Some do not handle just randomly plugging in and out USB devices smoothly.

The spike in CPU use is probably why the temp goes up, and you didn't say it was drastic, I must have just read between the lines and jumped to that conclusion, is probably why I jumped on the PSU heat, last post.

Here's a cut and paste of more info on that svchost.exe:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services - SVCHOST.EXE

Svchost.exe is a Generic Service Host Process for Win32 Services. It installs as a part of Windows 2000, Windows XP Home and XP Professional, Windows 2003, and the Windows Vista family of products. Svchost acts as a host for processes that run from dlls rather than exes. At startup svchost checks the Services portion of the Registry to construct a list of dll-based services that it needs to load, and then loads them. There can be many instances of svchost running, as there will be one instance of svchost for every dll-based service or grouping of services.

Under Windows XP you can find out what dll-based services svchost is running by typing Tasklist /svc at a Command Prompt (MS-DOS Prompt), while under Windows 2000 you need to use the tlist –s command from a Command Prompt (MS-DOS Prompt).

Because svchost is responsible for so many other processes, we'd strongly recommend against removing the file. Doing so could have unpredictable results.

You'll find background information on Svchost in Windows Vista at Windows Administration: Inside the Windows Vista Kernel: Part 1. To learn how to determine if any services are running under a particular process such as svchost.exe, visit End a process.

You'll find a description of Svchost in Windows XP at A description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP Professional Edition.

For a description of svchost in Windows 2000, visit Description of Svchost.exe in Windows 2000.

Sadly, some viruses attack and hide in this file. If your system is behaving strangely, please run a complete scan using your favorite antivirus software.

My case has USB 3.0 but my mobo doesnt no. I just currently not use them im not bothered.

And yes there is a disc which i used 3 years ago. But since there is updates to what is on the disc on the ASUS page and i only get a few things from there.

Nothing important though. Just a HDMI driver

Run this command tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe" forgot the last quotation mark.

Doesn't matter if the command prompt is in Elevated Command Prompt or Regular the command still works.

Added:

You have USB 3.0 on your Case. But the motherboard sees them as a USB3.0 . You don't have any ports to tell the board you have a USB 3.0 No drivers on the manufacture's website either.

I was afraid of that.

Lets see what this tells u

Click on :orb: type Resource Monitor and press <ENTER> once it shows up under Programs (1)

:ar: Click the checkboxes to the left of each of the svchost.exe processes (or just those that you care about). Now, switch to the CPU tab

:ar: See the names of the logical services in the middle pane? Now you can sort by the CPU column and you've got the name of your out of control process.

Upload a PrntScrn

I wonder if you have something stuck/lodged in a USB port, got a can of compressed air handy, or a bent pin maybe or something already connected is not seated tightly?

Just brainstorming...

I have UPnP Device Host disabled in my Services.msc screen, is yours? [just another thought.]
Regular Plug and Play service is still STARTED | AUTO
