svchost.exe (netserv) high cpu usage

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running windows 7, 2.16Hgz, 3.0 gigs memory, google chrome browser.

Recently the laptop began to slow down quite a bit. Looked at Start Manager and CPU usage was 100%.

I then looked at the Resource Monitor and saw that svchost.exe (netserv) fluctuates from 70% to 98% when nothing is running.

Rebooting lowers the CPU usage but after a while it goes up again.

I found the website "Full Malware Scan and Removal Guide" and followed all instructions and no good results.

Hope someone here would help me out with this problem.

Thank you in advance.

Lou

That could be the reason for this time but it happens other days of the week.

I have already set to let me know when updates are available but to let me decide when to download and update. Should I set to never check and do the checking myself? This laptop is 98% used by my wife to play games installed in the hard drive.

I will also follow the instructions you attached to rename gmgr.dll and see if that helps.

Thanks.

I was referring you to that thread because it references Windows update. There could be other causes such as malware. You should run a scan with your antivirus and malwareabytes. As for not finding that file it started with a q not a g. I don't recommend renaming that file at this time but to run virus scans.

Hi,
If you have windows update issues that will cause the high svchost to go nuts
Make sure these updates are installed if not manually install them
KB3020369 & KB3172605

When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

Just finished running Malware Anti-Malware and Norton Security full scan. No issues found on either.

A few days ago I ran RKill, TDSS Killer, CCleaner, Rogue Killer, ADwCleaner, and JRT. Ran some of these in safe mode. No issues found.

I already turned off windows auto update. Will check on the two mentioned updates and will follow up as you have recommend.

Won't rename the qmqr.dll file.

Thank you guys. I am at a loss. Don't know what else to do.

KB3020369 was installed 2/5/16. I don't have KB3172605. Changed Windows update to never check for updates and rebooted the laptop.

Want to manually update the second KB and started the Checking for Updates function.
It has now been running for over 1 1/2 hrs.

CPU utilization is at 100% with svchost.exe (network serv) taking around 95%.

I am going to let this checking for updates run over night and see if it ends by morning.

I have Update set at Never Check for Updates.

Window update ran for hours. I stopped the Service and went back to the Update window. It showed that Windows was up to date but I don't KB3172605.

CPU utilization was between 2% and 8%. GREAT!!

Rebooted and the service started again. Do I have to stop it every time?

By the way, how do I log off this site? Probably staring me in the face but don't see it.

Thanks for all the help you both have given me.

Lou

I don't KB3172605.

Sorry I don't know what that means ?
Did you install KB3172605 or not ?

Rebooted and the service started again. Do I have to stop it every time?
Well it is normal for windows to search for updates on start up but not if your settings are set to never check for updates so that is weird
All I can say is download the above update to your downloads folder... and disconnect from the internet when you restart.

By the way, how do I log off this site? Probably staring me in the face but don't see it.

On the bottom of every page here you'll see Log Out :)

KB3172605 did not install when I did Check for Updates. When the updates finished, it said that updates were up to date.
Is there a way I can look for just that update. I don't know how to do it if there is.

Hi,
What happened did it just spin and spin and never asked to restart ?
What should happen
The stand alone installer will search
It will then eventually ask if you want to install it and you approve.
Then once it installs you'll get a prompt to restart the machine.

None of what should of happened actually happened ?

I think I resolved the windows update service starting each time I reboot or restart.
Beside stopping the service, I also changed the start-up type from automatic to manual.
I just rebooted and the service did not start and cpu utilization is low.

Yesterday, I started Windows Update around 6:30 P.M. I saw your suggestion on stopping the service around midnight, went to the laptop and windows update was still running. I stopped the service and when I went to the Windows Update screen, it had finished, said that windows had all updates and did not give me a list of any updates to do or told me to reboot. KB3172605 is not listed as being applied to the laptop. Let me know if there is a way of doing this update manually, and how please.

If it is alright with you, I would like to wait until Wednesday of next week to mark this issue as solved.
I plan to do a manual windows update in the morning, after patch Tuesday, and see how long it takes or if it works like it should.

Thank you again for your time.
Lou
