System (C:) is almost totally full - how to free memory?

You should have 10GB headroom.

After a little cleanup, then:
I am using 27 GB with 18 GB being Win 7.

Your present C size is comfortable.

There are stunts one can pull to reduce the space used but they usually come back and bite you later.

If he doesn't use Hibernation, the hibernation file should free up some space.....just sayin

Myth, for the most part. Every drive/partition needs free space to work with (and as Karl mentions 10 GB would be great for the partition that contains the OS), it can be much less for other partitions (but it's dependent on how they are used). There are a few other conditions to consider, but performing disk cleanups and defrags would take care of most situations.

It doesn't matter whether you've got 10, 20, 30 or 40% free if your OS only needs 5% free space to work with.
