Kado and Cr00zng, yeah, that's what I was trying to think of. Windows PE 2.0.

It's not my computer that's not seeing the E-SATA, Cr00zng. There's a couple of others that are having problems with it. Wife has the Linux rescue CD and there's no problem at all. Like you said, could be the BIOS, or a hardware issue with the ones that are having problems.

I think it very much depends on your hardware and bios. I don't know about eSata but the linux rescue disk had trouble seeing a USB attached drive reliably. The Win PE disk finds it every time. The only problem is that it is only available with the paid version. The paid version isn't all that expensive (£30 inc tax in the UK) and it does have extra features.

If you install macrium on XP , you can download the free BARTPE component. ( They call it PE Builder now )

That is the same as the winpe 2.0 component.

You can then put the PEBuilder files on any 32 bit pe media , including pe2 and pe3 . It works great.

If you have windows 7 - you already have pe3. ( Winre.wim in the %systemdrive%\recovery directory, or boot.wim on the recovery disc/installation disc ).

As far as I know, Macrium has no "disk cloning" capability (at least I do not see one in their specs). But you can backup all the partitions on the drive in one run - only the recovery is partition by partition.

It's certainly in th Pro version. I can't remember if it is in the free. It's accessed by pressing the advanced button on the "Finish" screen in the wizard. You can also set it as a default under compression.

It's very easy:

I extracted 32 bit recovery iso into a folder on HD called EXTRACTED32BITISO



Made a new empty folder on HD called MOUNT

Mounted the wim





copied those macrium files into \MOUNT\Windows\System32

Unmount the wim

You shouldn't need to make your own pe disk.

Download Hiren's boot cd (latest ver 13). It has Macrium pe built in and works fine for me. It runs under Hiren's built in mini XP environment.

You can make images as well from the boot environment. Being able to image a system heading south has some recovery advantages.

(Also: you can run most of your standalone x86 apps in this mini XP environment as well)

The slight snag is you need to wait for sysrecoptions to run thru to get to cmd prompt - it's only a few seconds, but you can start Macrium straight off instead.


When you have copied the macrium files into system 32, scroll down to find system32\winpeshl.ini.

Open it in notepad ( it's read only - so rt click it first>properties>untickRead only>Apply> OK. )

Then change it to read:

[Launchapps]
startnet.cmd
reflectpe.exe

Save it, then unmount the wim. ( LOL - i can't type it needs to be [Launchapps]
and startnet.cmd - have corrected it above now)


MJF - no , you don't need to do anything at all - breathing is voluntary.

Some people would like to - in any case pe3 is better.

Another vote for Acronis, friend called at 9am, his system crashed when the power glitched. No way to get to hard disk, no recovery available. I had made an image with acronis last saturday and it took exactly 15 minutes to restore his C drive from an image I had put on his D. worked. and I was back home by 10.

So do I. But I'll doing a bit more checking myself now on potential issues.
I've been able to mount my old images and make them ok.
