Yeah, would be nice to know whether eSata works. I have an eSata port but no eSata disk or enclosure yet.

But this afternoon I shall test Sata3 for which I have an enclosure. I know it works for imaging, but I will check whether the Linux recovery disk can deal with it. Will report back.

your test results would be interesting. Though I can't really see if you can image to an internal sata why esata wouldn't work. My reading (therefore hasn't passed the jimbo45 B/S test) is that esata has better voltage tolerances because of added cable length.

I made the Sata 3 test with Macrium. The image with my little test partition went very fast (see below - probably a record). But the Linux recovery program could not recognize the Sata 3 external. So there is not much use of all that speed.

Maybe I will buy an eSata enclosure and run the test again to see whether that works. After all, eSata has been around for a lot longet and the recovery program may be able to deal with it.

I thought I'd be able to buy a standard sata HDD plug it into a docking station connect an esata cable and go. The linux boot disk will find macrium images on my internal sata partitions. What did you use whs in your test?

I used the old HDD I recovered from my laptop when I put the SSD in. It was in a Sata 3 enclosure attached to a Sata 3 USB port. Worked well for imaging, but not for the recovery.

Macrium Reflect works perfectly and 100% reliably both making and restoring Images on my Win 7 computer using my LaCie 2TB eSATA Raid 0 HDD...

Plus it is consistently more than 3 times faster than using USB 2...

Mine works fine, USB and eSATA external, Seagate and WD version of Acronis.
Been tested several times, but not with portable version of Acronis yet.

Macrium tested from USB and eSATA external HDD from standard program and from DVD version, not tested from USB memory stick, yet.

Question on Macrium restore...

Say my SSD drive goes caput and need to replace the drive with a new one. Do I need to get the same size, or any other reasonable size would do?

The new drive has a raw partition; will Macrium restore the system to this SSD and it'll have proper alignment?

Will it be a problem if there's no system reserve partition in the backup image? My working system does not have one and obviously, neither does the image. Will Macrium be able to re-establish the MBR as well?

1. Witn free Macrium you restore partitions - not whole drives. The partitions which receive the image must be the same or biigger size as the originating partitions. That would, most likely, rule out any smaller drive - unless the originting drive had other partitions on it that you do not restore.

2. A new drive you have to first align and create an active partition for the originating active partition (could be C or the 100MB partition) and partitions for any other partition you want to restore. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/113967-ssd-alignment.html?ltr=S

3. If you have no 100MB system reserve partition, then the Partition Mamager and the Bootmgr. are on C and you only have to restore C. The MBR is the first 512 bytes of the disk. That can be restored by Macrium too.

So, the Macrium isn't really SSD aware backup utility, which is pretty much the same as others. On the other handI think Windows restore is. I could be wrong...

Can the licensed version of Macrium backup full drive instead of partition only?

Both the paid and free Macrium can backup an entire drive an entire system or a pick and mix of partitions. You can however chose to restore any of the partitions on the drive separately if you wish. The main difference with the paid version is the ability to do incremental or differential backups.

I've been using Macrium Reflect with an E-SATA drive for over a year with no problems. Maybe I've been lucky, but backups and restores have always been very successful. I guess that's being overly dramatic, as anything less than "very successful" wouldn't be adequate.

As an addition to my prior post, I have the paid version of Macrium Reflect which includes a different boot disk than the original Linux one. This has to be downloaded separately from the Macrium download, and updates a couple of times a year, normally. I can't remember what it's called now, something PE (not BART) and is for Windows 7, and maybe Vista, can't remember that either. The free version uses the Linux boot. Could be that's the culprit on seeing the E-SATA drives?

Actually, thinking about it now, my wife's computer uses the free version with the Linux boot disk and an E-SATA drive and I've never had a problem with hers, either.

Now, I'm lost again. Don't know what could be the problem with not seeing an external E-SATA.

The other boot disk is Windows PE 2.0. It is a stripped down Vista recovery disk which works very well on Windows 7.

With the Linux rescue CD, I have no problem seeing the eSATA drive. Your computer, where Reflect doesn't see the eSATA drive, could have some BIOS issues that throws off Linux...
