System Reserved 100 Mb

I just noticed that on my install of Win7 RC that I have a partition labeled as "System Reserved 100Mb" (System, Active, Primary partition) on the main HDD. If Win7 install did that, whats the purpose??

Win7 did this. If your drive was empty, during partitioning it says it might add another drive for system recovery utilities and such. That's what this 100MB partition is for.

Actually AFAIK the boot manager doesn't live there but in one of the bootable partitions (designated as System), but there are recovery & repair tools and such. No drive letter is assigned to it by default, and should remain that way.

No, the boot manager (BCD) does live there. It used to be C:\Boot in Vista or when you don't have the System Reserved partition for Seven.

I agree for that reason the partition is marked as active

Well, I just removed the System Reserved partition, which the Storage Manager was happy to comply with, and had no problems rebooting ...

You were able to remove it because it is not being used for your boot manager. I just tried in a virtual machine. However, it tells me that I cannot remove it. And looking though the screen shots, System Reserved is not the boot partition for your setup. (Drive C: is your Active Boot Partition)

My bad I should know better than to believe anything I read on the web published by MS and interpreted by me. Must be more to this being maked as active than I am understanding.

That is correct. And all that was configured when I loaded Windows 7 into my system from a clean install and no other OS installed.

That's probably because the Recovery feature is also part of the main Windows 7 functionality. My take is that the System Reserved partition, in addition to Bitlocker and what not, contains redundant boot and recovery facilities in case your main OS gets hosed. And that would make perfect sense.

I have done four installs of windows 7 rc1 with no problem....but on saturday night i was redoing my HDX18....and in the disk setup screen prior to intallation i deleted the c drive partition and then made it new, which is where the windows 7 makes its own 100mb partition. this is how i have done it in the past....

BUT i think i made the c drive an active partition too..which has made my hard drive unuseable, for now till i can reformat it.

My question is am i correct in thinking that i should leave the hidden partition as the ACTIVE partion ONLY, and just make the c drive a primary partition?

still not sure why i did this as i have no problems with 7 before....just had a memory blank.... BTW windows 7 is really great, can be slow loading, but once its up n running...brilliant, and even better with a dedicated 8gb SDHC card as Readyboost.

Final update...took my wifes Maxtor 250gb portable apart.same drive in there!! anyway fitted my original master drive into the connectors..plugged into the base unit as a usb drive....the system partition was the active one!! i made the primary partition active and wallah....can now use the HDX18 as normal again...thanks peeps not sure how i did it originally but. solved now

Well after stuffing my first drive up i just quick formatted the c drive of my second drive, from the disk setup options after clicking custom install.....then just let windows install from there...no hidden partition i see using the manage disk drives option with the right click over the computer icon

ok I installed win7 on a 500GB drive and it did its thing with creating the "100MB system reserve".

But then I bought a larger 1TB drive and did a fresh install of Win7 on it and that went fine, so I thought let me clean/format the other install on the 500GB drive, and I did a format on it.

Well its not allowing me to delete the partition between the 100mb space, nor is it giving me any options for partition choices. I cannot change it from allocation/unallocation

I formatted both sections of the 500gb drive and both match in the formatted type (NTFS).

so what am I stuck with this 100mb section, what if I want to sell the drive, is that person going to be stuck with it...?

I had a thought to create a dynamic drive and give each of the 2 sections a drive name, then maybe seeing if I could join them as a dymamic drive.. would that eliminate the partition and give me a 100% drive space?
