Solved System Restore Deleting Restore Points

Hey guys, I just upgraded from Windows XP Professional 32bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Everything is working great except whenever I restart the computer all my system restore points disappear.

In system protection I have system restore on with Max.Usage at 2%

How can I fix this? Thanks.

How much is 2%. And how do you actually know they disappear -maybe there were none.

Hello CommanderSven, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That may not be enough storage space allowed for restore points. You might bump the percentage up until you have at least 5 GB set for the size. Afterwards, create a few retore points as a test to see if you have them stored.

I've tested out making restore points then restarting my computer. Upon starting system restore again, it says there aren't any. My 2% was at about 9gb so there is enough space. I just tried it again after changing the setting to 61% but it is still the same problem.

Have a look into the shadowstorage whether there really are none or whether the system restore just does not find them.

Open an elevated Command Prompt (run as admin). Then type or paste

vssadmin list shadows

Then hit Enter. See whether there are any shadows (restore points) on C.

When you installed Win7, did you remove the XP installation or did you install it as a second install? There are issues with system restore that match your symptoms if you have XP and Windows 7 installed on the same disk.

whs: It says "no items found that satisfy the query" so I guess there isn't one.

cluberti: I used a upgrade disc that I had to run from boot. It saved all my windows XP stuff in windows.old so it isn't a completely clean install but I'm not running a dual-boot or anything.

Looks like you are another "upgrade victim". Maybe you consider a clean install or settle for images (which are better and safer anyhow).

Norton does not interfere - as far as I can tell from my 3 Norton systems.

I just wondered as i had an issue with my system restores being unsuccessful then i uninstalled the norton trial i was trying out and installed MSE and the problem disappeared and system restore worked.
