Solved System Restore question (hopefully simple)

You should not put the slider all the way to the right. That will fill up your disk with shadows. I found, that the slider does not work very well anyhow. It is better to assign the space with Command Prompt. Open an elevated cmd (run as admin) and paste the following command - then hit Enter.

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /for=C: /on=C: /maxsize=10GB

If you want a different size, just change the 10 to your number. But I would not go any larger than 10GBs.

No luck. I even set it to 20GB - Task Scheduler says it ran and created a restore point Sunday 2:48AM but there's nothing there... I knew I should have just built my PC myself like I always do... looks like 5-10 hours on the phone with HP...

Was there no restore point right after you created it or was that hours later that it had disappeared. It looks like something is clobbering your restore points. We'll have to find what that could be. First I would look into the scheduled tasks to see whether there could be a culprit - anything that manipulates the disk.

There may be a junction between the two. I assume you have already tried sfc /scannow. The next best idea I have would be a Startup/Repair.

I did the sfc /scannow but start-up repair I have no disks with the PC (they don't include them) but I know there is a mode I believe F9 that does a repair? but I don't want to do a clean install and reinstall everything again. I'll see what HP says first.

Wait a minute - better yet I have a Windows 7 64 bit disc at work. I can simply use that right? as for a repair procedure..

Edit itis actually Enterprise Edition and I have Home edition. Does that matter?

No that won't work.

Find a H. Premium installer around the web and you may be able to do this, if the SP 1 is installed on your PC it will have to have the SP 1 integrated into the installer you 'find' for it to work.

How to Do a Repair Install to Fix Windows 7

For that matter if you find the exact same version the PC shipped with, this is an option.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media; if you can find an exact Windows version that the PC shipped with you can do a clean install using the activation key on the COA sticker attached to the PC though it may require a robo-call to MS to sort the OEM batch-key.

How to Activate Windows 7 by Phone

If you can't find an exact same version, you could use the info in this tutorial to create an "all versions" installer of any version Windows installer, to install using the same method I posted above.

Windows 7 Universal Installation Disc - Create

After you have made backups of everything you care to save, the best method is to do a complete wipe (secure erase) of the entire Hard Disk Drive first, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old drivers/programs, giving you the best possible space to install Windows to.

Thx for the info but if it came down to that I would just try and RMA it and get a whole new system from HP. All those links / info should not be done to a PC that's 3 weeks old. Not doing a clean install at this point. I spent 5 hours getting this thing just the way I want it and installed drivers, programs etc I will try the System Repair Disk first.

I have that from Neosmart. If you do not have a Windows Backup or a System Restore point it will not work. That was a problem for me before when my pc went broke and I used that but it did not find a restore point since I booted to XP(and booting to XP erases all my restore points). I used a system image backup.

One other thing. What am I selecting when I get here?

I've seen this screen before in XP with recovery but I never had to use it. I don't see where I can select "repair" my system boots fine so I don't want to select startup repair...

ok looks like Starup Repair also scan all your files to see if any are damaged from what I'm reading but if someone could confirm that would be just peachy! :)

Found this:

For example, the Startup Repair Tool can automaticallyrepair the following problems:
  • Missing/corrupt/incompatible drivers
  • Missing/corrupt system files
  • Missing/corrupt boot configuration settings
  • Corrupt registry settings
  • Corrupt disk metadata (master boot record, partition table, or boot sector)
  • Problem update installation

That was all for not. Ran Startup Repair. It scanned for about 3 seconds and found no problem. I checked the log - all passed. I'm just gonna download a W7 Home disc, wipe my box out and reinstall. Only option I have and I can get rid of all this HP bloatware. I stopped all those services but still I no need it lurking.

Script to create restore point

If like many you find Windows a bit vague when it comes to automating restore points you may want to automate them according to your own requirements.

I came across this handy forum article recently and now have them scheduled every 12 hours. If you're dubious about downloading the file there, run your own virus/malware scans or upload it to Virus Total for peace of mind.

I have a script that works great on Windows 7 to create a restore point. Scheduling it in the Task Scheduler to run once per day is good. Otherwise it can be run by double clicking a shortcut icon.

I will post this tonight as it is on my other machine.

Nevertheless, Windows shoud be creating a restore point everytime you install or remove a program or install Windows Updates. Make sure that you have your System Drive protected and set as "On"...

Hello- yep it does create restore points automatically and when I install new software but even w/o a reboot i'll check it in like 20 minutes and it simply is gone poof! disappears.

Make sure that you have your System Drive protected and set as "On"...

Where is that setting?

I've also read conflicting reports that these should be set default (manual) and don't start them. They should work on there own. Some say make sure they are running. I did both and still no fix on the restore points but I will check on theh dep. tab.

Verify if these two services are running:

1) Volume Shadow Copy service
2) Windows backup

Also ensure that their dependency services are running.
Verify if their dependency services are running.
You can check this information from services.msc

a) Go to start and type services.msc in the search field.
b) Locate the two services.
c) Right-Click on the service one at a time.
d) Select properties.
e) Go to Dependencies Tab.
f) Note the dependency services.
g) Make sure they’re also running.
h) To start a service, right click on it and select start.

** Also I get no errors

Other reported problems in executing the dll re-registrations suggested the above thread were:
1) "Module ole32.dll was loaded but the call to DLLREgisterServer failed with error code 80070005"
2) "Module eventcls.dll loaded but the call to DllInstall failed with error code 8000FFFF"
3) "Module es.dll loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found."
4) "Module vssui.dll failed to load." Please make sure...
don't get any errors
