System tray settings don't stick

I have a lot of stuff going on in my system tray and I need to have certain icons displaying all the time and others hidden all the time, etc. So I change the settings, but they don't seem to stay that way no matter what I've done so far. Is there some way I can make this work better or is this an inherent bugginess?

Thanks,
Ellen

If you are thinking that I'm not logged in as administrator, I am. The problem is that an occasional icon will not stay hidden when I set it to hide or will not always show when I set it to always show. Most of them behave the way I want, but it gets annoying when they don't.

Hello decibelle,

If you haven't already, check the program's settings to see if it may have one of it's own to control it's system tray icon.

Some programs like an AV program may not always stay hidden no matter what you have set.

John,

He's wanting to keep his notification area icon settings the way he had them set like below.
He doesn't want to add or remove the notification area, OR to use a custom icon for one of the notification area icons. ;)

The tutorial you provided should do the trick.

Thanks, Shawn!

The alert that tells you "this device can perform faster" will never stay turned off. It keeps popping up because I'm using a KVM switch and for some reason the system doesn't like where I have it plugged in, but I'm going to keep it there anyway because there's no problem. I keep setting the alert to "hide icon and notifications," but it immediately resets to "only show notifications," and what it actually does is show icon and notifications every time I switch back to my computer from the other computer. I cannot make it stay away. This happens in spite of my unchecking "tell me if my device can perform faster" in the box that opens up if I click on a USB icon.

Is there a way to disable at least this one message?

Try this to remove the pop up message.

Click on the balloon message to see a list of available USB 2.0 ports.

At the bottom of the This Device Can Perform Faster window, uncheck the box Tell me if my device can perform faster then close the window.

That's what I did, and it doesn't go away. Needs a registry tweak?

Go to Device Manager and expand USB serial bus controllers, see if any of them have yellow caution icons. Right click each one and select properties and click on the driver tab, click on the update driver button. See if you can get a newer driver.

Thank you, but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with any of the components. I was just hoping to be able to have more control over my tray icons.

He's wanting to keep his notification area icon settings the way he had them set like below. He doesn't want to add or remove the notification area, OR to use a custom icon for one of the notification area icons. ;)

I'm having the same trouble as decibelle: some - but not all - icons that I set for a specific behavior revert to the (apparently) default "Only show notifications". One particularly troublesome one is an icon that should be displayed whenever a macro launched by Macro Express Pro is running. I set it to "Show icon and notifications". Whenever I do so I get the message "This notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it becomes active." So the next time I run a macro the icon shows in the Notification Area as I've set it. This works for a while but at some point - I don't know exactly when - the icon behavior will revert back to "Only show notifications".

Is there some way of locking the customization so it won't change without user intervention? If not, is there a file or Registry item that could be changed that would set the icon behavior as if I'd gone through the manual process of re-customizing it?

Notification Icons

Hi,

Just an observation from me regarding what I see on my own machine.

When I see the messagge - "This notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it becomes active." - It's usually been after the Windows Maintenance Troubleshooter has run or even the desktop cleanup wizard.

I've checked Event Logs and confirmed that this is the case. Rebuilding the Icon Cache has always fixed the problem. Also my personal preference (not recommended) is to disable the Windows Maintenance Troubleshooter from running in Task Scheduler and instead run it on demand once I've scanned for broken shortcuts with other third party software. Also I've applied a registry tweak to prevent Windows from tracking broken shortcuts. I've disabled the following scripts:

TS_UnusedDesktopIcons.ps1
TS_BrokenShortcuts.ps1

That's an interesting possibility. Looking at Task Scheduler, though, I don't find it listed there. It's not listed in the main directory of tasks listed under Windows nor under Windows/Maintenance, so it appears that it's *not* currently scheduled to run automatically. However, I'm finding that the problem occurs not only after a reboot but also if the macro program is terminated and restarted, so perhaps the problem lies with the software, not Windows. I'm sending a note to the vendor and will report back any reply I get.

It appears to be a software problem after all. Here is their reply:

We are aware of this behavior but have not been able to come up with a way to avoid it. This is an open issue but at this point does not have a high priority. We would be interested in any additional information you receive from sevenforums.com.

I'd still welcome any suggestions.

Here is what I did to fix this problem (no, I don’t know why it works, but it did for me):
Step 1: Click on the up arrow on the taskbar to reveal the “customize” link in the pop-up window. I did NOT unlock the tasbar as some have suggested.
Step 2: Click on the “customize” tab and make your changes to “show icons and notifications” for those icons you want to have appear permanently in the taskbar.
Step 3: Log off your profile. Do not restart, just log off.
Step 4: Log on to a different user and make the same changes as in Steps 1 and 2. I did this to see whether I had a corrupted user profile and to see whether it would work for another user.
Step 5: Log back on to your user profile to see whether the taskbar was properly saved. The icons appeared this time!
Step 6: Restart your computer and log back on your user profile to confirm that the icons still appear. This time they did!! For some reason, if you make the changes to the taskbar and restart your computer, the user profile information was not saved. However, if you log off, they do. I don’t know why this worked, but it did for me. Good luck.
