..and I can't get into BIOS (UEFI).

hello wise ones.

The machine is an i5 and about 3 years old. I believe I had this problem once before, but have forgotten what I needed to do to fix it..

Yesterday was my birthday (yay -73!) and Best Beloved bought me a Ti graphics card so I can play Fallout 4 when the price drops, bless 'im. I put it in and had a problem because it would take about 2 minutes to boot into Windows with beeps every 30 seconds or so, after which it was fine. I figured the problem could be to do with BIOS, so I found the appropriate upgrade, which reckoned to improve compatibility with PCI-e graphics cards, flashed it and everything booted up as normal after that. I think I got the machine to shut down and reboot a couple of times, then I left it running while I finished some stuff on the old machine (the two are linked by a KVM switch). I noticed Nvidia wanted to update something, and allowed it to do so, and I turned off the Asus Graphics Tweak app and service as do not want that.

When I told the games machine to shut down again, it did so, but then rebooted. I switched it off again, and it rebooted when I tapped the keyboard to switch the KVM to the other machine - and even turning the monitor off caused it to reboot it seemed. I had to keep the power button pressed for several seconds to kill it and left it as a problem for today - which meant I had a start-up repair screen this a.m.. I had figured I just needed to get into BIOS to configure some of the 'wakeup' settings and that would probably sort it out.. Today the problem is still there of course - but I can't get into BIOS, it just goes to the Windows screen. I tried a system restore with AV switched off, and that was not successful either. So, stumped. Any ideas please??

Update. I disconnected the games machine from the KVM mouse/keyboard and attached two other USB inputs - the machine then shut down without restart, and I could access BIOS ( relief - I wondered if that was corrupt). Now I am going to put it back on KVM and see what happens....perhaps THAT needs an update as well..

changed keyboard but still reboots (sigh) and goes directly to Windows.

just updated firmware on KVM - did not solve problem :(

Just one suggestion paws - juts change the KVM for something else or return it for replacement if that is an option cos it seems to me to be the problem here.

Dear ICIT2LOL, I am a happy bunny; the problem is sorted! After I installed the new Ti Graphics card, the machine was slow to boot, and clearly summat was wrong, so I went onto the mobo site and looked for a later BIOS. The next one up had greater compatibility with PCI-e cards, so I went for that. It installed and verified and that was that.. it fixed the slow boot, but then I was having the continual re-boot problem. We e-mailed ATEN support and a helpul and patient techie came back very quickly and confirmed we should upgrade the firmware for the KVM, and then got us to try different input keys, etc, but nothing we tried was successful. Putting the old graphics card back didn't solve it either, so we knew then that it wasn't the card. I assumed it MUST be the KVM, because if we were not tethered to that, I could get in BIOS and the machine behaved normally. I was WRONG.. I went back to the mobo site and downloaded the latest BIOS available and everything returned to normal HOORAY!!! So, problem now marked SOLVED. If there is a 'moral' to this tale, it would be 'always get the LATEST BIOS update', I should suppose.......and Fallout 4 came today.. yay! Thank you for your help :)

Glad it got sorted and from a source that is vaguely familiar to me after I bought my gaming Asus ROG G750JM it would not load drivers for 7 without updating the BIOS - something I must add I don't like doing.

Oh and a belated happy birthday - mine is a few days time - 5 years behind you so I guess we have seen between us a lot of changes over the years eh?? If someone had told me I would be wearing a watch that had a digital readout on my wrist back then or could talk to someone electronically on the other side of the planet in seconds I would have advised they be certified LOL!!

thank you ICIT2LOL. Hopefully I won't be bothered with it (W10) as I took ownership of the GWX folder in System 32 and renamed it. That seems to have shut it up.. :)
