The Dreaded Frozen BIOS Screen

Hi all, thanks for having me on the Forums.

I built a new PC which has been running a dream for about 3 days right up until today when I updated the BIOS to the latest version (1304). On reboot every time the machine started to blue screen (very quick, not enough time to see the message) and when I managed to get into the BIOS it would just freeze up.

I did a bit of research on the web and decided to reset the jumper and remove the CMOS battery for a reset. On booting up this time the machine constantly freezes on the BIOS screen which is telling me to press F1 to run BIOS setup. I press F1 and nothing happens. I also cannot enter BIOS by pressing delete as the keyboard wont function (even though it shows as connected).

I've tried all sorts including:
- Longer time without the CMOS battery and jumper reset
- Removing RAM, changing slots etc
- Removing all devices including drives, USB etc.
- Checked cables and connections are ok
- Removing GFX card and trying a different one

Nothing so far has helped or made any difference in the symptoms. I would REALLY appreciate a steer please.

This is one of the problems of updating the BIOS & things go wrong. Often it means the motherboard may be ruined.

Did you download the BIOS update & copy it onto a CD or a flash drive & then attempt the update using that. If you did then you could retry updating it.

If not, can you use another computer or a friends computer to download the correct BIOS for your motherboard, copy that to a CD or flash drive & see if you can fix the BIOS.

Hi and thanks for the response.

I updated the BIOS using a Windows utility from Asus which dowloads the BIOS and then reboots the PC into the new BIOS version. I have tried the USB approach but as my keyboard isnt recognised I can't hold down any F keys or navigate into the boot menu. I have been trying to eliminate components all night and now I can't even get a picture from a 3rd party or onboard gfx. CPU light is also now on red. I've never had a problem so bamboozling before.

Try using the display port on the motherboard and a PS2 Keyboard.
That might get you into the bios.

Why were you updating the Bios?

I will go back to watching.

Why don't you try to load previous/different version of BIOS using BIOS Flashback Button on your mobo.
This way you don't need to enter BIOS or use keyboard.
Just insert USB stick with BIOS and press Flashback Button for about 3 seconds.
For better safety use USB2, not USB3.
Make sure to check the manual for detail instructions.

Display port on motherboard isn'tworking and now even 3rd party gfx cards (ive tried 2) arent working either. I was auto alerted to a BIOS update by some Asus utility that came with the mobo.

I've tried using the flashback button to no avail, it just flashes forever without stopping and no change to the situation despite following manufacturers recommendations. Im going to strip the whole thing down and remove the CMOS battery/change jumper for 24 hours, any thoughts on whether thats a god place to start and rebuild gradually?
