These files say I dont have permission to delete them?

Just a couple of points with permissions which may help with assigning and removing them ....

The permissions assigned are always set as the lowest access level set therefore a user folder with limited permissions set for "everyone" will cause difficulties for access even for the "administrators" group which is included in the "Everyone" Group

The deny permission settings will always take priority over any allow permissions and therefore should only used when no other permissions are appropriate. Unfortunately this is not always the case even with Microsoft themselves .

Setting a deny permission for everyone will likely lock all users out of the area except the Hidden Administrator.

Ok I've got this problem again.

On my main media HDD I've got a ghosted out $RECYCLE.BIN & also a System Volume INformation which is also ghosted out.

Now I can click on & enter the recycle bin folder, but when I try to access the System Volume it gives me this error message:

& regardless neither one of them will allow me to delete them, even after I try to give myself ownership?

The system information folder is a system file that is locked whilst the operating system is running.

You can reset this from the advanced system properties by adjusting the requirements for the shadow copy and system restore and if you wish you can switch it off for a particular drive

The grayed out resyle bin is on all drives (removable as well) and there may be multiple recyvle bins under the main one. These are not emptied when you choose Empty recycle bin

You can open these and delete the subfolders, but leave the original Recycle Bin intact.

There are files in those rectcle bins that have been deleted of that drive.

Hmm well I dont want either one of these files/folders on my media HDD - they just popped out of no where a couple of weeks ago.

So what is the easiest way to get rid of them both? If the one is locked while the computer is running... how are you ever able to delete it?

You should be able to get them not to show by putting your folder view settings to Hide.

But there are a lot of times when I want my folders to not be hidden... and that just kind of seems like its sweeping it under the rug.

There has to be a way to permanently get rid of them?

Go to Computer - properties - advanced system properties - system protection and you can switch off the system restore and previous versions to save space - the folder will remain as it is an integral part of the OS, (I think the last windows OS not to have this functionality was windows ME so it is not a win7 issue), and is as much a part of the OS as the windows folder.

But what I dont understand is that this is just an external media HDD and they werent on there for the first few months & then just appeared a month or so ago?

Can I relocate them or anything just to get them out of sight & my view?

I don't think you can actually relocate them or delete them - you can hide them by choosing to not display operating system files (you still have the option to show ordinary hidden files)

I've had success several times by using PowerShell then using the ATTRIB command to clear any system, hidden attributes and the deleting the file/folder.

Also you can sometimes delete a folder if you first delete all files in the folder.

Be sure to right-click on Powershell and run in Administrative mode.

Some stubborn files are the result of malware. Here i use MalwareByte's Anti-Malware (go to MalwareBytes.ORG and NOT to malwarebytes.COM), I find Windows Security Essentials to be an excellent AV program. Microsoft's Malicious Software removal tool will remove some of the more common rootkits. I also use, but with great fear and trepidation, ComboFix to remove rootkits. Please, please read their instructions.

What if that doesnt remove it?

I'm running essentials & nothing comes up for malware issues?...

I think I even ran spybot the other day

It's under the more tools tab, but I think your gonna be sorry if you delete those files.

FileASSASSIN is a special program to unlock and remove individual files. You have to be sure you want to remove the file as removing the wrong or needed file can cause problems. It has a choice also to remove the file on bootup in case it won't remove it in Windows. It was designed to remove malware files but can be used on any file and it does not know or care. It tries to do what you told it so you need to be sure what you want to do.
Here is a snap shot.


Brose to the file you want to delete and select the options.
