Hi all I recently started playing Thief and the graphics of the game are amazing and I love the atmosphere in it. My game running on Maxed out and smooth but I don't know why there so much stuttering or loading everytime I start the game. When I ran it first day the game ran pretty fine during the prologue. Is it because my RAM is just 4GB or Thief needs a patch?

Don't own thief so take this with a grain of salt. My suspicions would be the stuttering could be because of the hardrive. If you haven't already try defragging the drive if it's a hdd, if it's on a ssd then leave it alone. Could also try updating your graphic and chipset drivers. Honestly I don't think it's because of you using 4 gb's of ram. Only thing I could think about that could also start stuttering is if windows is hiting the page file often while running the game though i'm not entirely sure. Sorry if I accomplished nothing with this post but at least it's slimming the options of what could be wrong.

Also I would just update the game to the latest, if you're using steam it should do it on its own if you have auto updates enabled. Anyways try defragging, team fortress 2(differnt game but I think it still applies to games in general) would stutter for me until I defragged my hdd which was like 15% fragged.

Hi Boogieboy,

Have you checked out the Thief forums to see if they are reporting the same issue? Might be worth a look as there might be suggestions on solving it. They should also be able to answer any questions concerning any patches.

Thief series - Steam Users' Forums

And which Thief game is this anyway? I could assume, but...

I'm playing this at the moment and so far I'm enjoying it. Playing it on Master with some of the assists off (particularly) the waypoint indicator makes the game more immersive and closer to the originals style. (What I remember of it anyway). Avoiding fights and being sneaky makes it more challenging and enjoyable. Running around killing people with arrows would make the game a bit tedious and boring.

My only real complaint is performance. It is rather stuttery. It's not a bad looking game, but the performance is a bit sloppy for what it is. It's also quite VRAM hungry. I'm playing in surround and with everything maxed except SSAA (set to low) it uses about ~2.7GB

Even with single screen, SSAA on High goes over 2GB VRAM usage. If your card only has 1GB, you'd definitely need to turn it off.

I found that using SweetFX helps improve the quality. I'm using K-putt'e Config 1.2 and it does help remove some of the "bluriness".

Sorry for another extreme late reply and almost forgot about this thread idk why  well after the update and the latest NVidia drivers the game is running smooth as silk and no stuttering or loading issues anymore :D the game is great a I would recommend anyone to buy it!

maybe try another AA sampling as I think the SSAA is very hungry.. I'm playing game on Maxed out settings on 1440x900 :o

SSAA is indeed very hungry due to its sampling nature. On high it's essentially doubling the resolution before being down sampled.

Since I posted last, I realised I had vysnc set to double buffer instead of triple buffer. I'm now running @ 5950x1200 (bezel corrected) everything fully maxed and SSAA back up to High. It uses all 3GB of my vram easily, but it's worth the slowdowns. Triple Buffer does help a bit. (I hate screen tearing and practically always use vsync)

I've found that when entering a new open area, if I spin around for a few seconds each way - it tends to minimise any further stutter as it loads all the textures. I still get some stutter, but only the largest open areas. Otherwise it's not too bad and worth the IQ trade off.
