Hi, all! I just got this computer four months ago and I am getting a "This computer is not running Genuine Windows" message every so often. I no longer have the Windows install disc that came with the computer. The computer is a Sony Vaio. Here is the diagnostic report:

It appears slc.dll is the culprit. But I don't know how to fix this on my own. Can someone please help?

I guess I should have looked on the forum a bit. It looks like others have my same problem. I guess I will look at the solutions there and try to find my way.

DON'T DO THAT!!
90%++ of the solutions in other threads probably do NOT apply to your problem!

You have a rare problem - a (single) mismatch in the file slc.dll (or slc.dll.mui)

First, please run the standard disk/file checks.....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

How long does it take for the SFC scan to finish (I already did CHKDSK before I posted my second response)? Because right now the command prompt window looks like this:

I have to admit to not being surprised by that - SFC depends to an extent on the SLC.DLL which is broken.

Hopefully the following will help...

Your best option in that case is to run the CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from a Recovery Environment boot.

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
then type the following command

CHKDSK <drive>: /R

and wait for it to complete - it could take a few hours, depending on the size of the drive.

Once complete, type

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

Post another MGADiag report

This won't help but just a question if the computer is only 4 months old how did you mange to lose the install disk? should have been kept somewhere safe for things such as this.

Not trying to pick on you. Have you made or obtained the Backup/recovery disk's for your Computer?

Most computers don't come with 'install disks' - and haven't since around 2005.
It's much more common for them to come with a Recovery partition, from which it may or may not be possible to create the backup/Recovery disks necessary.

I know of one major manufacturer which would appear to be in breach of its contractual agreement with MS by NOT providing proper means of recovery - and refusing to supply disks.
I hope they are refused a license to sell Win8 - but I won't hold my breath on that basis.

The disc was moved by a family member. And he doesn't remember where. I did a search from top to bottom and never found it. I did make a recovery disk, but on the night the error message started popping up.

Read the second sentence of the OP,
My computer came with a recovery partition and the ability to make 1 set of recovery disk's.
or he could probably buy them from the manufacture of the Computer for a lot less.

The first error is normal with an offline SFC - the second one isn't!
I'm not sure what's going on here - but it's the second such case I've seen this week, and I've never seen a case before that I remember.
I suspect malware -
Please boot to Safe Mode with Networking, and only then, download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free version) from www.malwarebytes.org update it, and run a full System scan in your main account, and quick scans in any other accounts (still in Safe Mode).
Delete everything it finds!
Reboot to normal mode, and attempt another SFC /SCANNOW and upload the CBS.log again, and we'll take another look.

I've never seen a 'cannot be checked' response in SFC before, so we need to look at the files concerned, while I do some research......
Let's concentrate on one, for the moment....

Interesting!
Your Panda account is the only thing with permissions on the file.
C:\Windows\system32>ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\winload.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winload.exe Panda-VAIO\Panda:(F)

We need to correct this.

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window

Code:
Takeown /F C:\Windows\System32\winload.exe /A
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\winload.exe /grant Administrators:(F)
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\winload.exe /grant Users:(RX)
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\winload.exe /grant "NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller":(F)
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\winload.exe /grant SYSTEM:(RX)
post the results, then reboot and run another MGADiag report.

Then try running another SFC .SCANNOW, and post the new CBS.log file
