I've been using my laptop for several years, and have never reinstalled or otherwise attempted to modify the copy of Windows that came installed with it. However, some time ago after a Windows Update reboot, my desktop went black and I was treated to a warning window about how my copy of Windows is "not genuine." This is obviously an error, and I've be grateful to anyone who can help my fix this.

If it matters, note that I've been a little lazy about getting help for this -- this problem started over a month ago.

The problem is that your system is unable to properly read the BIOS SLIC table that should be present in the system to be able to self-activate the OS.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

I was prepared for fixing this to be a long, drawn-out, and painful procedure. I can't believe it was that easy. Thank you so much! :D

Out of curiosity, any idea what could have caused this? Was it just a random glitch?

The BIOS SLIC tables are flashed at the manufacturer's factory - and sometimes the flashing appears to be unstable. The consequence is that it doesn't take much to corrupt it - the odd cosmic ray could do it. ;)

Just one more instance of 'sh1t happens!' :)
