This copy of Windows is not Genuine after cloning drive. Fix!

Hi there
Using a tool that is YEARS out of date for creating and restoring images is likely to cause problems in any case.

Use something like Acronis or at least software designed for W7. I know this doesn't help solve the problem you had but I'd image your system next time with one of these products.

In rare cases after restoring from these images - even on to a different disk or partition on boot failure the system recovery disk will fix the system.

Messing around with the registry IMO is a big NO NO unless all other options have been tried and failed.

Cheers
jimbo

interesting. I posted on some other thread here about my examination of imaging/restore programs for the purpose of moving W7 to new hard drive and having it actually work.
I used Acronis, Terabyte and others [terabyte was 'sworn to' by one of my friends who is an IT director]. some of the packages I made multiple tries with. only Paragon worked without a single hitch in that original case. I ditched the others.
Obviously my experience is different from others but it is what it is.

interestingly, and no offense to other good sftwr firms and their converts, but my buddy since has told me of issues he has had with Terabyte in his shop, and poking about for some others to test out.

if i can figure out which of many threads I posted that saga on I will link it here.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

I have a general question on this topic: is the condition that causes a "This copy ...not Genuine" condition distinct from the several issues that can cause a non-Activation? My assumption is 'yes'.

Help pls. suggestions?

Gang I want to give this a whirl again.
Need your help.

I've successfully imaged-over Win7 [several forms] to new hard drives without a hitch using Paragon Backup & restore. But then I hit my nemesis.
This is 32-bit Professional running on an Aopen mini cube. It works great, but if you know the system, this is a passively [mostly] cooled Intel-mobile based shoebox, and the drive that was shipped with it with the Win7 load is a conventional desktop sata hard drive. So, I have a laptop drive I want to use instead.

When I did the image, installed the new drive as SATA 0, and restored the image from an attached USB drive [same as I used on every other one I have], it loaded fine and booted, but then I got the dreaded black-background and the terse message : "This Copy of Windows is Not Genuine". I was just stumped so didn't try to fix it because I had no clue why this particular one failed where others worked.

Anyone got suggestions? I think I will try it all over again this morning 'from scratch' and see if I get any diff result.... i think its one of those insanity tests...

It's a shame that no-one thought to take an MGADiag report of the failing installation - there are a set of errors associated with this problem, and it would have been VERY nice to see it that set applied here, since the only solution so far has been a repair install.
If anyone has an MGADiag report of this case - please post it!

My son's laptop had the "not genuine win 7" message. Tried the phone activation but it failed saying it may be a pirate copy !
It's not. Bought from Amazon this year.

I have tried a re-image using my back up software as we had a complete image of his C drive. But no change. MS help suggested a tool to provide a diagnostic report. I have pasted it below.

Any help welcome......

Thanks for the reply.

I have just come off the phone to MS in the USA (I assume) and they have confirmed that the product key is not for a copy of Win 7 Home Premium.

Have emailed this information to Amazon UK.

I have to say that I am very surprised as You would think that products from Amazon would be Genuine. It actually came via an Amazon re-seller.

Now a very pissed off Amazon customer !!!

It actually came via an Amazon re-seller.

That's the problem. The reseller. Amazon has little to no control over resellers. On the other hand, I've never had a problem with Amazon direct.

I'm afraid it just goes to show, once again, dealing with the Microsoft store direct is the best way to avoid being ripped off.

Is there any way you can report this vendor to Microsoft? I would have thought they could at the very least cancel his MSDN subscription.

do NOT expect a response - there are legal reasons why they cannot do anything except a pro-forma automated reply, but every instance is checked, and many are pursued to the point where the vendor is charged and convicted.

Sorry - they do work elsewhere - let's try this.....

Your Windows Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following stickies.... .....................

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.
