Started the PC yesterday and got a message that my copy of Windows is not genuine, after several years of use. Have tried some steps I found online but generally come up with errors in activation (0x80070005). Last thing I did with the computer before this was install Comodo backup. Tried restoring to earlier backup but problem persists. Have tried Microsoft support but can never get through after extremely long waits. Any help?

This can be caused by a number of things - top of the list is an over-zealous security application.

What AV is currently installed?
What other security software is installed?
What other AV's have EVER been installed on this machine?

I currently use Avast AV and Comodo Firewall. I also periodically scan with Spybot, Windows Defender, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and Spywareblaster, though none of those should be running any active protection.

Avast can cause this type of thing - rarely. Comodo I'm not familiar enough with to be able to comment, but the last time I attempted to sue it I really disliked it (a good few years ago now!).

The others can be ignored for the moment
Is Avast the only AV you've run since the last reformat?

Perhaps the Event logs will show what's happening...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

I can't remember if I had Norton AV and ZoneAlarm on this computer years ago. I don't think so, but it's been a while.

You appear to have a mess of problems in the Networking area.

Please open Device Manager
Click on the View option in the menu bar, and click on the Show hidden Devices option.
Now look for and uninstall/delete all entries with yellow triangles or red crosses.
Uninstall the following two devices (flagged or not!)
Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection
Intel(R) 82583V Gigabit Network Connection

reboot and allow Windows to reinstall what it needs to - wait a few minutes and then reboot again.

Then open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

SC QUERYEX LanmanServer
SC QUERYEX srv
SC QUERYEX srv2
SC QUERYEX browser
SC QUERYEX fdphost
SC QUERYEX LanmanWorkstation

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I removed the two Intel Gigabit Network Connections you indicated and a Portable Devices: F:\ (which I think corresponds to the printer's card slot). Nothing else had abnormal icons.

OK- that's not changed the report...
Let's see what running a cleanup for your potential past AV's does...
Download the ZoneAlarm cleanup tool from http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/download/clean.exe - run it, and follow any instructions, then reboot.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
then post another MGADiag report.

with a bit of luck there's be enough new data in the event logs to make it worth having another look at them - please run through the procedure in my post #4 and post the new logs, and we'll see if I can find anything new.

The System log is a lot clearer now - but there are still some interesting errors in the Applications log...

Activation context generation failed for "d:\games\steam\steamapps\common\f1 2011\CustomActionOnFinishInst.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "d:\games\steam\steamapps\common\f1 2011\CustomActionOnFinishInst.exe" on line 1. Multiple requestedPrivileges elements are not allowed in manifest.
Activation context generation failed for "c:\program files (x86)\spybot - search & destroy\DelZip179.dll".Error in manifest or policy file "c:\program files (x86)\spybot - search & destroy\DelZip179.dll" on line 8. The value "*" of attribute "language" in element "assemblyIdentity" is invalid.

Steam had an unenviable reputation for causing problems because of poor programming - that may have changed.

Spybot is something we rarely see in the event logs so it's probably a sign that the installation is faulty. I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling - make sure that you switch off all Spybot functions (Tea-timer, etc.) before uninstall.

Apart from that, I can't see much wrong.

Let's see what happens if we rebuild the License store...

Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

Ran the commands. Activation process failed with the same 0x80070005 error.
Spybot uninstalled. Will uninstall/reinstall Steam once I figure out how do it without losing game data.
