"this copy of windows is not genuine"

so yeah... im ON my laptop it has this message on the bottom right. do not know why it came with win 7..it hasn't hindered my abilities on my laptop..but its annoying cause i do not know why it would now pop up 6 months after getting my laptop.

Where did you get the copy of Windows? Did you purchase the laptop at a retail store? If so, you might need to take it back if they didn't provide you with a Windows disk with a key on it.

If you purchased the laptop from a person online or in the paper or something, the copy might not be legitimate.

Was this a copy of Windows 7 that was included with the laptop purchase? Is Windows 7 showing as activated? If not, can you go through the activation process? You have to give us the details before we can begin to guess at what is going on.

it has worked fine since i bought it from best buy 6ish months ago..it just popped up about 30 minuets ago for no reason...

it says i need to buy a key. but i refuse to buy a key for a product that came with a working windows 7..IF i have to buy another copy ill just get a new laptop...im not too fond of this one..

i dunno about the BIOS..it popped up a message while i was installing an update for CS5 and it said "this copy of windows 7 is not genuine" and game me 2 options..i canceled of course cause it had "live support" and not a windows logo. so im confused..

You can either re-activate online, or call Microsoft and have them activate for you. Another option that has worked for me was to use the Change Key option, and enter the key on the bottom of the laptop...then activate online.

i jsut noticed something VERY wierd...my laptop is a L455D-S5976 but my system thing says toshiba L305D....

Hmmm..most interesting. This is what the mgadiag log shows:

Windows License Type: COA SLP

License Status: Notification
Notification Reason: 0xC004F009 (grace time expired).
Remaining Windows rearm count: 2

1) Though you say that win7 came preinstalled on your machine, the current key is COA-SLP and not OEM-SLP. That indicates that the COA key has been used (if there is one), probably to phone activate, sometime in the past. Or windows has been activated using some irregular means such as a loader.

2) The error 0xC004F009 means that the Software Licensing Service reported that the grace period expired. This can happen if the grace period expires before the system is activated.


Without going into too much detail, I would just say, call up MS and do a phone activation. If your system is genuine, there'll be no issue.

If what you are saying is true, Bestbuy took you for a ride. Otherwise, you are taking us for a ride.

Only you know the truth, so the two options are;

1) take the machine to Bestbuy and confront them with that mgadiag log.

2) Buy a genuine copy of win7.
