To Improve my old system.

Hello. I am considering increasing my memory from 2gb to 4 gb, and am thinking about switching from 32bit to 64bit ( 64bit will run on my system just fine. )

The point is to make my desktop run faster. I do not do anything which is processor intensive. Mostly just email and news reading. Occasionally I might modify in image, but that would be the hardest.

Mostly I want firefox to respond more quickly in rendering pages etc.

Would making any of these changes improve my lot in life or should I just settle for my system as is. It is 4 years old and still works like a champ. Dell did a good job on this one.

Thanks for your input!

Richard

Hey there,

From the standpoint of a very impatient individual, I will say that once you go there, you can't go back. I have 8 gigs of ram and a killer AMD x6; but the biggest difference is an SSD. Once you host your OS on one, you just wont believe how much faster it is compared to a standard (7200rpm) platter drive. Its crazy.

That's my two cents!

Heather

I'm a Windows 7 fangirl. I will teach a class for you or write a custom course for you RIGHT NOW.
I love EVE Online. I'm Sayra Sainer. I play Starcraft II. My gamertag is Tal0nn. I'm trying not to play Minecraft.
I also like coffee. I'll take a basic triple grande extra-hot breve stirred ristretto caramel machiatto.
depends on your system specs... what are they? unless your going to be running lots of RAM hungry programs/applications then over 2gb would not be of a real benefit... more benefit would be achieved from a ssd as oready stated... maybe a 40gb-64gb and maybe a new 1tb mechanical hdd which are around £40-£50... and maybe an upgrade in cpu depending on socket and board.... cannot say much more till you post system specs..

I agree! An SSD will do wonders for your computer's performance! In addition to blazing fast file transfers my HP desktop now boots in 14.5 seconds according to the Windows uptime clock and full MBAM scans now only take 4.5 minutes. As for the performance of Firefox on the internet with your Dell you might check out Fire Tune.

Thanks for all the good information.

I will look into a SSD. I have lots of HDD space so I had not considered that.

It makes good sense that a SSD would probably do more than extra memory.

Thanks again for all the excellent help

Have a nice day,
Richard

A ssd, more ram, and a 64 bit will speed up your computer doing most everything. It will not speed up your internet speed. It will speed up how your computer processes the signal it received over the internet. If you haven't already did so, look in our tutorials and you will find little things to do a little house cleaning on your computer that can speed things up a lot. Tutorials is at the top of every page. Lots of great information there. Beware, you can get hooked on tutorials.
