Off the top I know this cannot be done, but I figure I might take a stab and see if maybe one of you gurus have a work around. The title speaks for itself, bought a new laptop that is w7 64bit, but I want to move my stuff from my 32bit xp to it. I already know that you cannot use the easy transfer wizard to go from 32 to 64 or vice versa. Maybe someone know of a software free or paid that can make the move flawlessly.

A cloud based file storage system, or an external hard drive are all the ways I know, sorry.

Yeah I know about those. I already know that I can just backup the files and folders and then restore them to the new location. But I want to move the settings as well, hence my post.

As there is no supported upgrade path from XP to 7, I don't think there is.

All I am going to say is,,, you are asking for trouble if you do this.

Just reinstall your apps and copy over your data.

You will have a more stable system in the long run.

Trying to force migrating data from a 32bit system to a 64bit system is going to have some problems. It might work, but I would rather do it right and do it from scratch than try to force a bunch of settings to play nice with a completely different architecture.

A. you don't know if those settings are exactly right on the 32bit system that will migrate without issue to a 64bit architecture.

B. Not all 32bit apps play nice on a 64bit system to begin with, so trying to force migrate settings over is going to cause you more problems and take longer to resolve.

In other words,, you will spend less time reinstalling than fixing some screwy 32bit app that doesn't work on 64bit os.
