I am assembling a second computer with identical CPU and motherboard:
i7-4770K, ASRock Extreme 4 Z87, CPU-video
RAM of second computer to be determined

Can I use a clone of the Windows 7 Pro build from the first computer, and simply change the key?
I have another, unused copy of W7 Pro.

The first computer has had multiple hard drives & SSDs, RAM sticks, etc.,
but always the same CPU and motherboard.

Will the history of the first computer compromise the second computer (with its new key)?

If its an unused Product Key you should be fine on the new build. One key per computer . Unless you purchase the Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack ( for 3 computers ) . Don't think they sell those anymore.

Where did you get the product key ? Keys come with discs ( legit versions )

Ok then that OEM disc should have a COA sticker on it .

If you already own OEM version on that PC then the existing key might reactivate on the same mobo. This is how OEM's often handle this. It's worth a try.

Any other retail SKU can of course migrate wherever you want. If it's Upgrade version it requires a copy of qualifying OS being available and not used while serving as qualifier.

Not sure I understand "reactivate". I am adding an additional computer, and plan to continue using the first.

The boxes each have a different COA Barcode. That is different from the product keys, which are also different from the barcode, and from each other.

What gregrocker is saying that once you use that key you can't use it on another PC . It goes to that motherboard you first installed it on .

OK, it wasn't clear you intend to keep using the first PC.

In that case you'd need the second license, but yes you can change the Product Key after cloning at Computer>Properties or using SLMgr Commands to insert key and activate from Command Line.

The windows 7 pro is a multiple (3) use. So i guess u should not have a problem. In any case as you mentioned you have another unused copy which might be used if this fails.
Secondly be assured the history of your current computer is not going to dent your new computer.
