Trouble going from ethernet to wireless...

I'm running a Gateway DX4720-03 (manual: https://www.manualowl.com/m/Gateway Computers/DX4720/Manual/148002) with Windows 7 HP 64-bit and have a Nvidia GeForce 7100/nForce 630i card and a Linksys WRT 320N router. My problem is that I always thought that this desktop computer was wirelessly connected to the internet, but I just found out that it was connected via an ethernet cable. At the moment everything is working just fine (portable computer wirelessly synched with desktop, guests can easily access my wifi, no problems with the internet, etc), except when I try to set up my wifi camera as an access point and have the computer recognize it. It was at this point, after much, much research and fiddling, I discovered that my network was set up as a Local Area Connection using an ethernet cable. In fact, the router was never listed in Network (under Network Infrastructure) until I just now selected "Add a wireless device." But, when going to Device Manager, Network adapters has MS Teredo Tunneling Adapter and NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet and under Network Infrastructure Devices there is MS Wireless Router Module...the Linksys router doesn't show up here even though I just added it. From all this manipulation, it should be obvious that although I can very handily tweak my browser (Firefox), maintain a clean computer, solve various computer related problems - with help from the various forums, I am truly at a loss when it comes to networking and wireless set up.

So, what I need to do is get my computer to work wirelessly (and to recognize other access points) without disrupting an apparently well working computer. My gut tells me that I have to disconnect the ethernet cable from the computer in order for the router to be recognized. Furthermore, if this is correct, will the computer then automatically recognize my router and other access points that are close by in the neighborhood...or must I do more to make this connection work?

I just don't think that when I set up this computer that I ever correctly set up for wifi and have been using a LAN connection all the time. Obviously, I know "dit" about networking and wifi set ups. I tried you suggestion to no avail because there was nothing there to indicate that wifi was available to this computer. Here are some screen shots from opening that link. If you agree that no wifi recognition there, and if you have the time, perhaps you could help me get my computer to gain wifi access.

To be honest I don't see any wireless cards in specs. You can't add a wireless like you do and those are routers as you see, you should have a wireless card under "Network adapters" in Device Management.

You can either get a wireless adapter for the PC or transfer to laptop first and then copy to desktop (workaround, and not a real solution).

Hey Gokay, I must apologize for my bird-brain not understanding your reply. However, due to my continued searching for an answer to my problem, I think I've finally got a handle on it. Damn, the solution was really quit simple, but I overlooked it because the wrong question was asked. The question should have been: Given my computer's make-up (Nvidia GeForce 7100/nForce 630i) and non-functioning MS Teredo and MS Wireless Router, is it capable of detecting a wireless router? The answer is NO, and I will need a wireless adapter to do this. Do I have it, now? If so, could you suggest what I should get?

Teredo is a IPv6 thing, not specific to wireless. You need a specific hardware called a Wireless Network Interface Card to connect to a Wireless Router. I don't think you have one (I checked a website or two that lists your PC's specs, none show).

I am reluctant to advice you a wireless card, as I am not familiar with them. Best you get advice from someone familiar with the devices and the market in US. Until then, provide your routers 802.11 spec - N or AC? Check its manual if you don't know.

My router is N, with 11a and 11g. I do believe that a USB adapter will do the trick...no need to monkey around with instilling cards. I've got the choice of adapter question on Tom's Hardware forum.

Got the adapter and the computer is now working wirelessly, or if I choose, with ethernet. However, even with my friend's added knowledge, all we did was to verify that there are problems with establishing a new user. Still getting the same error message when trying to log in...can't find profile to load. He's working on it as a homework assignment (LOL).

In order for the camera to recognize the computer and windows 7, I have to fill-in usernames and pw's into the camera.

Ok, that is what I would expect, but you don't need to login with that account on the computer login screen to accomplish that.

And that's one of the blasted problems...I can't get the computer to accept a user account. I get the new account's name and icon, but when I go to log to the new account, I get the error message that the account's profile can't be found. I need a new user account because the camera won't hook into my admin account (because I think it is two words and the camera's keyboard doesn't allow for two worded user names) or the guest account (don't know why can't get into the guest account).
