OK – Here’s my situation. I have a home network with a Server 2003 running as a file server. I have a number of partitions that I have shared. I’ve mapped these shares on my XP, Vista, and Windows 7 computers. Up until last week, everything was working fine. Last week, on my Windows 7 computer, I noticed that all my shares to the Server were x’ed out. When I tried to reconnect, a security window pops up and asks me for a login and password. I remember, initially, when I mapped the drives it asked me that, and I provided a Server 2003 administrator login and password, that allowed me to map these drives. I am not running Homegroup, all computers are on the same workgroup, and have Windows 7 professional. Also, only Windows 7 has this problem. The Vista and XP machines have access and are mapped, and I am able to access the shared directories on my Windows 7 with server2003 and XP. :(
Any assistance in this will be greatly appreciated.

People still map network drives?

Probably a password expiration policy... Check your domain setups.

Alright, so I’m old school. This is the way I’ve been doing it since Windows for Workgroups and NT-4.0. In any case, with my limited knowledge of networking, this is the only way I know how to get to stuff on other computers. I’ve never had any problems until Windows 7. (I’m even been able to reach out and touch my server with Ubuntu.) I’m not sure what you mean by “Domain setups”. I am not on a domain. I have all of my computers, including the server on a workgroup. I’ve checked the security and sharing and ensured that the users (me, the wife, and the kid) have full access. I’ve removed sharing, rebooted, and then re-shared to see if that worked. All my other computers still have access except the Windows 7. Getting really frustrated- Any more suggestions?

Mapping drives is definately old school... The new way is with Folder Shares, which is how Win7 works best. There are a mess of Workgroup Sharing tutorials on the net (Google is your friend) and I'm thinking it's probably time to make the leap...

Also noted that If you are on Win7, accessing pre-win7 computers, regardless of it's name "Home Network" isn't going to work for crap. You will have to use a Work Network setup (XP style sharing) to get the real joy joy happening...

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I had a family emergency, and was out of town. Anyway, I’ve fixed my problem. The simplest of things normally turn out to be the hardest. Somehow or other, my workgroup on the Windows 7 computer changed back to its default (workgroup). I didn’t realize this until I got back home, plugged my laptop back in, and checked my network neighborhood.
Even though it’s old school, some of the programs I am running require a drive letter. I store all of my important data on the server, which gets backed up every day.
Anyway, thanks for the assist. Consider this thread closed.
