I got a pretty bad virus on my Asus G72GX-A1, from which I could not get rid off.
After backing up Idecided to run the Windows 7 Recovery Media Disc included with the computer.
I booted up the computer from the recovery disc, selected the language and selected recover windows 7 at HD with 2 partitions. The program starts a counter, which goes to 100%, afterwards it prompts me to insert the support disc.
After inserting the disc, a cmd windows opens up and apparently it runs a program calles AsCopy.exe.
After some time, the computer restarts and, at the Setup is starting services screen, an error message pops up with the following message: "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."
I did the same process over 10 times, tried the options of recovering just the windows partition and the entire HD, but I get the same problem over and over again.

Any hints on what could I do to get the recovery discs to work ?

Best Regards,

Have you tried to run a system recovery from the recovery partition (if its still there)? I think in Asus you need to tap F9 repeatedly at boot to launch recovery from that partition.

No good

I tried that, although i am pretty sure my recovery partition no longer exists, if there was any.

What happens is that I get bo error messge, but the computer stays on the setup is starting services screen forever, ans nothing happens...

An infected HD should always be wiped with at least 2 sets of zeroes before reinstallation, using free Partition Wizard bootable CD or Win7 DVD or Repair CD:
Free Download Magic Partition Manager Software - Partition Wizard Online

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

Then run your Recovery disk set to see if it will install. You could have infection in the disks as well as your data, which should all be scanned using Malwarebytes and AV.

If this fails, borrow or find a Win7 installer, unlock if necessary your version to reinstall with the Product Key on the COA sticker. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/85813-windows-7-universal-installation-disc-create.html

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/70248-troubleshooting-msconfig.html

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly. CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
Auslogics Disk Defrag - Reviews and free Auslogics Disk Defrag downloads at Download.com

Then save a Win7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html
