Solved Unable to access Display in Control Panel and System Restore

Hi

I'm suddenly finding that I'm unable to open Display and others (e.g. System) in Control Panel on my laptop running Win7 professional 64 bit..
If I try a system restore I get an 0x80042302 error message ref. the Volume Shadow copy service.
If I then try to run Services.msc as administrator to check if the Volume Shadow Copy Service is running I get a box saying:
'MMC cannot open the file.............
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to view the file.'

Display worked OK a couple of days before this, when I changed the resolution to connect to an external monitor.

Any advice please?

Have you already tried doing a system restore at boot instead?

Thanks for the response Brink - I now find that it won't boot from the system recovery disk. I've checked the BIOS and it's set to boot from optical drive first!
THe optical drive is working OK though. I'm using an HP 620 laptop.

Any ideas now please?

You might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot by downloading a Windows 7 ISO at Microsoft: Windows 7 Direct Download Links, then create a bootable DVD/USB with the ISO file to use to boot from instead.

Hi Brink, sorry for the delay, have been away.

Eventually managed to do a system restore at boot, following your advice, and am pleased to report that all is now OK.
