Solved Unable to access My documents or My Computer

Not sure if this is the right place to post
Hope you can help me.

On FRiday I could access everything as normal, today when I click my documents
or my computer nothing comes up at all.

You could see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated on or before Friday may be able to fix this for you.

I did think of that, but as the computer is relatively new, it didn't have a restore
point..my fault. Is there away around that?

Have you made any changes or install anything between now and Friday when they worked?

Just to be sure of the exact folders, what's the full path of them?


You could see if runnig a sfc /scannow command may help. In addition, double check to make sure that the C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents folder is set with the default location using the tutorial bleow.

Maksfin,

Unless you disabled System Restore, then you have restore points.

Microsoft automatically creates restore points before performing some operations.

Please check your restore points.

That is a very thorough tutorial, however, I get to the necessary dialog much quicker by:

When I try system restore, I get this message.

"no restore points have been created on your computers system drive"

This would normally open your C:\Users\(user-name) folder. You could just go there manually in Windows Explorer instead.

Did you substitute your user account's name instead of (user-name) in the path? That was just an example for you to use your's instead.

When you open Windows Explorer, click on the C: drive in the left navigation pane, click on the Users folder, then open the folder with your Windows 7 user acount's name on it.

Yes I did substitute the folder name for (users name). I can't even open My Computer from the start menu
to go into the c drive that way. No page comes up.

Are you getting any error messages?

Are you having issues running anything else?

If you are able to, I would recommend to use Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper to scan you system at boot for malware to help make sure it's clean. If you need to, you could create the bootable USB/DVD on another computer to use on yours.

Ok so I have downloaded and put the system sweeper onto a cd. but now when I insert the cd, nothing comes
up for me to action...
We don't have any other internet issues.

If you did the STEP ONE section at the link above to burn it to the CD, and not just copied it to the CD, then you would need to restart the computer and boot from the CD for it to run as in the STEP TWO section.

how do i run it from boot once I am restarting

The STEP TWO section in the tutorial link above can show you more details on this. Usually when you restart the computer, you will see a "press any key to boot from CD or DVD" message. When you do, you will need to quickly press say the space bar to boot from the CD.

If you do not, then you may have an option on the boot screen to press a F key to open the boot menu to be able to select to boot from the CD.

As a test before we get into doing more drastic measures, create a new administrator account, create a password for it, and log in to it to see how it works in this account. Hopefully it's only a issue in your current account.

After your sure the new account is working ok, delete the problem account.

But give it a few days or a week b4 you kill it.
