Solved Unable to Activate Windows 7 Pro Upgrade from XP

I'm trying to upgrade a friend's Lenovo R61i notebook computer from XP to Windows 7 (see full specs in my profile). I've managed to get everything installed (much more painful than I expected).

Now, however, when I try to activate the system, I receive a "The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 product key". I've tried everything I can find online, but without success.

Posting here as a last resort...can this installation be salvaged? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The product key showing in the report, is a default, and cannot be activated
full key - HYF8J-CVRMY-CM74G-RPHKF-PW487.

Your friend will have to purchase a genuine key.

Thank you for the reply!

Hmm...there's no product key with his upgrade disk, nothing even close. Is the upgrade disk supposed to have a new product key?

I have two different keys from the XP install (one from the case, the other from XP), but it's not taking either when I do Activate.

The one on the bottom of the case comes back immediately as an invalid product key. The one from the old XP install comes back with the "The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 product key" error message.

May I ask, is it possible he got a bogus copy of Windows 7 upgrade, or does the upgrade no longer work for XP?

Hi Thylacine,
heres a little explanation from Wiki,

NOTE the RED
Windows 7 version

Anytime Upgrade in Windows 7 no longer performs a full reinstallation of Windows. Components for the upgraded editions are instead pre-installed directly in the operating system; a notable result of this change is that the speed of the upgrade process has been significantly increased. Microsoft stated that an upgrade should take approximately 10 minutes.[14] Anytime Upgrade also does not require physical media or additional software.[16][15] Instead, Windows 7 requires a user to purchase a license online, in a manner similar to the initial functionality that was later removed from Windows Vista starting with Service Pack 1.[14] Microsoft would also release Anytime Upgrade packaging for Windows 7 at retail. The packaging, however, would only include a license for the edition to be upgraded, as Anytime Upgrade in the operating system does not require physical media

MS actually discontinued this a while ago, (3years+ if i remember correctly).
It was ONLY for an upgrade from Vista, not XP.

If your friend bought it as an Upgrade disc i suggest he goes back to them and demand a refund.
There were 2 types of Upgrade
Vista >> W7 and
W7 edition upgrades ie home >> pro etc

So

Hmm...there's no product key with his upgrade disk, nothing even close. Is the upgrade disk supposed to have a new product key?
There is a caviat to the above it did come in packaging in countries where no broadband was available.
In this case it would have with a coa like this but with the Upgrade description.
(certainly not in the US)

202840d1331785878-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a-coa-stickers.gif

The XP keys certainly wont activate it

In regard to claiming a refund

The one on the bottom of the case comes back immediately as an invalid product key,
you could try googling the last 3 blocks of it - Multiple hits = bad news or read any results for clues.

Finally as i said ealier Upgrade option was for Vista to W7, where there were required elements to build from, which is why you had so many problems using it.

Roy:

Thank you very much for the additional clarification, this explains a lot.

I googled the last three blocks with the old XP key, and found a bunch of threads with the full product ID and comments about how it's an illegal copy. Yikes.

So, that settles that...thanks for suggesting this. Not sure when or where he purchased this, but 9+ years on...well, it's water under the bridge now.

At any rate, he purchased the upgrade from a big box retailer here in IL earlier this month, so hopefully he can get a refund.

Meanwhile, I'll see if I can find somewhere to buy a product ID (looks like Newegg has the full version for $30 less than he paid for the upgrade).

I'm going to mark this as resolved. Thanks again!

You might be able to purchase a product key from Microsoft. Right-click on the Start button and choose Properties. Then choose "Buy a new product key online".

mrjimphelps:

Thanks for the tip, we might try that (nope, doesn't seem to work).

I had a call with him earlier about options, he's trying to decide between getting a newer notebook or getting the Windows 7 product key.

Just as a follow up:

My friend was able to return his "upgrade" copy on Saturday for a refund. He purchased a legitimate license from Newegg this morning for less than the upgrade version. I used the new key to activate the install, and everything worked.

Turned out the system was originally a floor model where a store tech did a hasty reformat and install of XP after the sale to clean it up. Figure they had one cracked disc they used for setting up all their store displays.

Thank you again for the help in sorting this out...installing Office now.
