unable to connect to email

I have recently upgraded to W7, and have tried to start using Windows live mail; i set up my email account but cant send or receive; i get the following error message. Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong?

Unable to send or receive messages for the Btinternet (xxxxx) account. The e-mail server returned an error.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: -ERR Cannot connect to POP server 217.12.13.134 (217.12.13.134:995), connect error 10061

Hi pennypup, I found this:

The POP3 server (incoming mail) is mail.btinternet.com

The SMTP server (outgoing mail) is also mail.btinternet.com

Both need your BT Yahoo! email address and password

you will have to tell your e-mail program that the SMTP server requires authentication.

The SMTP server can use either port 25 or port 587.

The most common fault is to provide your ADSL username and password when your BT Yahoo! username and password is what's required.


Have a look at if you have the smtp authentication checked and wich port it must use.

hi pennypup,

i've got a btinternet account too. live mail's auto-configure doesn't quite work properly here.

in windows live mail, press the 'Alt' key to bring up the toolbar, then tools >> accounts

select the bt account, and click the 'properties' button.

you'll need the same settings as shown below.

however i can successfully log into webmail using same user name and password. whether there is any personal certificate issue? some times windows live mail is working some times am receiving the error messages..

please help to resolve
