Unable to establish Remote Desktop Connection Windows 7

Hi,

Long time linux user, but first day of working remotely from home today so went out and bought a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium this morning.

I am trying to access my work PC remotely after doing a fresh install of windows and receiving the below:

"Remote desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled."

I have established some sort of VPN connection through the browser with work (sorry I am not very technically inclined, icon says "network connect" in the taskbar and shows I am conected), our techie guy said then just run Remote Desktop and type in my computer name and should connect, which it is not.

I phoned a work buddy who is working remotely who said he can ping my work machine no problem.

I tried disabling the firewall but this has not helped.

Any ideas?

Weird, just dawned on me to ping the work machine myself and it worked. Still can't remote desktop to it though.

You are using Windows 7 Home Premium. You are able to connect
to machines running Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate or Enterprise.

To establish a Remote Desktop Connection you are correct, you can use either the
full computer name or the IP address of the machine.

Both machines need to be set so as to allow remote desktop connections:
Click the Start button
Right Click computer
Click Properties
Left pane click remote settings
Check the box for remote assistance and the radio button for "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop
Add the users you require

Both machines need to be configured to allow this connection
and the connection obviously can't be made if the computer is
in sleep mode or hibernate.

I thought a Linux user would have found this quite simple

Yes I had come across these steps in my searches, appears that the layout of this window has changed, I see no option to add users to remote desktop.

Looks like it may be an issue with Windows Home.

Can't believe this.

As if Windows Home isn't expensive enough as it is.

Yes - you are right

Sorry that was my mistake (please see the message at the bottom of my banner)

Unfortunately - using Windows Home Premium you will be unable to create
a RDP session as this is only available in Windows 7 editions from Pro upwards I believe.
Maybe you could see if your boss would perhaps let you install TeamViewer, or
perhaps you are the boss in which case even better!

My only other suggestion is that you take your Home Premium disk back and exchange it for
a version which supports RDP connection.

They won't let me exchange as the seal on the box is broken and they have no way of checking of it has already been registered.

Looking to upgrade online now.

OMG I am pissed. My fault for not doing my homework I guess. At least my boss hasn't been on my case for wasting an entire day.
